UNITED STA. TPZLSENT OFFICE.
CHARLES JONES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOVE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 29,175, dated July 17, 1860; Reissued August 6, 1867, No. 2,714.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES JONES, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the same is described and represented in the following specifications and drawings.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention and improvement- I will proceed to describe its construction and use referring to the drawings in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
Figure 1, is an elevation of the front of a stove with my improvements. Fig. 2, 1s a section through the line Z, Z, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section below the line Y, Y, Fig. 2.
The nature of my invention and improvement in stoves, consists in making a flue from the space below the grate to the space above the fire inside of the outside case of the stove for the purpose of carrying off the dust and ashes from below the grate by the draft through said flue when the fire is raked, and thereby prevent the ashes from escaping into the room or apartment from the stove; and thereby dispense with the unsightly and expensive outside flue or column heretofore used for the same purpose.
In the accompanying drawings A, is the base of the stove which may be made in the form shown, or in such other form as will answer the purpose intended. It is provided with an opening at B, for the air to enter under the grate C, to supply the fire; through which opening, a poker may be inserted to stir and rake the fire on the grate C That portion of the stove above the grate may be made circular or otherwise, and provided with a door D, to supply fuel, and an exit pipe E, to conduct off the smoke and gases from the fire. 'On the inside of the stove, adjacent to the outside I make a flue F, extending from below the grate O,
up into the space above the fire, and provide said flue with a valve or damper F, which may be opened or closed by the handle Gr, outside the stove. The object and purpose of this flue is, to have the draft through it take the dust and ashes from below the grate, when the fire is raked, and carry them into the exit pipe E, and prevent their escaping through the opening B, into the room or apartment. WVhich flue may also be used by adjusting the damper G, to graduate or check the draft through the fire, and at the same time keep up, and continue the draft through the stove, so as to ventilate the room, and carry ofi' the noxious gases rising from the fire, which have sometimes proved fatal to the persons occupying the room containing the stove, when the draft opening and damper have both been closed. I prefer to have this flue on the opposite side of the stove from the door D, and opening B, and right below the exit pipe E, so that the air that passes through the flue will pass directly into the exit pipe without crossing the fire, as it would do if the flue was not directly under the exit pipe. It is apparent from the foregoing description and drawings that the flue F, is between the outer casing of the stove, and the lining H, which surrounds the fire.
I believe I have described and represented the improvements in stoves, which I have invented, so as to enable any person skilled in the art to make and use it. I will now state what I desire to secure by Letters Patent.
I claim as my invention and. as a new article of manufacture:
A stove provided with a flue from the space below the grate, to the space above the fire, within the outside case of the stove for the purpose specified.
CHARLES JONES.
