Description

No. 25,128. PATENTED AUG. 16, 1859.
1.1111155 STOVE.
I Fay-l P fifi T n n 2' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MAGEE, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,128, dated August 16, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MAGEE, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Stove; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l, is a side elevation of it. Fig. 2, a vertical and central section of it. Fig. 3, is a horizontal section taken through the flrepot grate. Fig. 4, is a horizontal section taken through the ash pit and base flues.
The nature of my invention consists in an arrangement of a pot, grate, hot air chamber, ring ash grate and register and ash pit together and with direct and descending and base flues as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A, exhibits a grated fire pot of circular form and being composed of a series of bars, a, a, a, &c., arranged at equal distances apart so as to have spaces between them. These bars extend upward from a horizontal ring grate, B, and terminate at t-heir upper ends in a ring or annulus, C, from which a partition ring, D, extends to the case, E, of the stove, such case being cylindrical and concentric with the firepot and arranged at such distance therefrom as to form a hot air chamber, F, around it. The lower part of the firepot is provided with a grate, b. Furthermore, on the ring grate, B, is another grate or register, G, by which the openings of the grate B, may be more or less closed or covered. This register grate turns freely on the fixed grate, which with the fire potgrate is situated directly over the ash pit or chamber H, and open directly out of it.
A flue space, I, partially surrounds the ash chamber, H, and opens into a discharge flue, K arranged at the back of the stove. Furthermore the smoke space or chamber, L, over the firepot is provided with a direct escape pipe N, and two or any other suit-able number of pipes, M, M, pass and extend downward through the hot air chamber, F, and into the flue space, I. A damper, O, is
placed in the pipe N. The top, P, of the case, E, is applied thereto by means of a sand joint, which is composed of a beveled metallic ring R, inserted in the upper part of the case and so formed as to make with the case, a groove, S, for reception of the ring flange, T, extending downward from the top, P, and fitting closely into the case, E. lVhen the groove is supplied with .sand or its equivalent, and the cover is put in place, the sand will seal the joint so as to prevent the smoke and gaseous products of the stove from escaping through the said joint.
In the operation of this stove', much of the air for supportof combustion passes through the ring grate, B, and its register, G, and thence between the vertical bars of the frepot and into the fuel that may be in such fire-pot. This current of air serves to protect the external case of the stove from being burned or becoming too much heated. The ashes that may drop out of the firepot and upon the ring grate will pass through the latter into the ash chamber, the amount of air passing through the ring grate being regulated by its register.
By having the descending pipes M, M, pass through the hot air chamber around the lire-pot the draft through them will be facilitated and furthermore by leading the smoke into the base flues, about the ash chamber, the heating powers of the stove are augmented. lVhen the damper is open, the smoke will not pass down through the pipes, M, M, but will escape through the direct flue in which such damper is placed.
I claim* The arrangement of the pot grate, A, the ho-t air chamber, F, t-he ring grate, B, the register, G, and the ash chamber, H, together and with direct, descending and base flues substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
JOHN MAGEE.
