W. 11. TAYLOR.
v GATE POST. No. 250,858. Patented Dec. 13,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. TAYLOR, OF CRYSTAL CITY, MISSOURI.
GATE-POST.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,853, dated December 13, 1881.
Application filed October 28, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. TAYLOR, of Crystal City, in the county of Jefferson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gate-Post Supports to Prevent Gates from Sagging, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in a triangular lever to be applied to a gate-post, as will more fully appear hereinafter.
The drawing is a perspective view of my invention.
A represents a gate, and B a post, to which the gate is swung.
The triangular lever consists of a base or sill piece, 0, and an inclined piece, D. The sillpiece rests upon the ground, and its inner end abuts against the post, as shown. One end of the inclined piece is secured to the post at or near its top, and its other end is secured to the sill-piece at or near its outer end.
E is a weight placed upon the sill-piece, preferably between the joint of the two members and the post, as shown. In prairie countries the weight may consist of a box filled with dirt.
This device may be applied to old posts al- (No model.)
ready in the ground or to a post when the gate is first swung.
The inclined piece may be secured to the post and to the sill-piece in any desired way. One of these supports may he applied to each of the three sides of the post, as shown, the gate being swung to the other side, and thus support the post in all directions.
I am aware that a support somewhat similar in appearance to mine has been used on portable gate-posts; but in this case the bottom of the gate-post is stepped into the sillpiece, which at once makes a device inapplicable to posts already in the ground when the gate is swung.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a device for supporting gate-posts to pre- "ent the gate from sagging, the inclined piece D and sill-piece O, the former secured to the latter and to the post, and the latter abutting against the post and being weighted, all substantiall y as set forth.
WILLIAM H. TAYLOR.
