SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 267,548, dated November 14, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID LONG, of East Thetford, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification,

and in which Figure 1 is aperspective view of two panels of my improved portable fence. Fig. 2 is an end view of one of the panels, showing the folding fence-post in position for supporting the panel. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the folding fence-posts in its position for supporting the panel, and Fig. 4 represents the fenceposts folded for storage or transportation or when not in use.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Myinvention has relation to portable fences; and it consists in the detailed construction, as hereinafter described and claimed, of a foldiug fence-post, and in its combination with the detachable fence-panels.

In the accompanying drawings, A and A,

represent two panels of my portable fence. The fence-posts consist each of the legs or side pieces, B B, which are hinged together near the top upon the bolt b, and a brace or cross-piece composed of the two parts 0 O, which are hinged together by the bolt 0, and hinged upon the side pieces, B B, by bolts (1 (I. This connection of the parts B B and U 0 permits the post to be folded, as shown in Fig. 4, in such a manner as to occupy but very little space. The-crossed ends of the legs or side pieces are cut off or rabbeted, as shown at e, to form notches in which the top rails of the panels will rest, as clearly shown in Fig. 20f the drawings. To fill up the crotch or notch formed by the rabbeted crossed ends of the legs B B the panel used in starting the fence should have blocks or keys f, of the same thickness as the rails or planks from which the panel is made, nailed to the projecting ends of the top and bottom rails; but as the building of the fence progresses the overlapping ends of the rails of successive panels take the place of these keys, and provide fora snug fit in the crotches of the posts. The bottom rail, with its keyf, (when used,) is beveled to lit the wedge-shaped crotohes 9 formed by the hinged arms 0 0 when the posts are in position.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that each panel has a twofold supportviz., by the top rail in the crotch formed by notches e e in the crossed top part of the legs B B, and by the bottom rail in the crotch'g formed by the hinged and adjustable armsG 0. When the wind blows and bears against the panels these will bear down against the hinged arms 0 O, and the greater the force of the wind the greater will be the pressure upon said arms, which will draw the legs B B together, and thus clamp the lapping ends of the panels, as in a vise.

I am aware that fence-posts have been made before in which the overlapping ends of the panel-rails have been supported in the crotch of the cross-stakes and the bottom rails upon a bent rod hooked with its ends upon the diverging legs of the cross-stakes; and I am also aware that fence-posts have been constructed on the lazy-tong principle, with the overlapping ends of the rails resting in the .notches formed by the pivoted cross-bars. I

claim neither of these constructions; but,

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire tosecure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The folding fence-post herein shown and described, consisting of the crossed legs or side pieces, B B, hinged at b, and having their crossed ends notched or rabbeted at e e, and folding arms or cross-bar, G G, hinged together at c and to legs B B at d 61', substantially as and for the purpose herein sho wn and set forth.
