Description

F. M. WHITELAW.
PACKING AND TOY BOX.
No. 250,026. Patented Nov 22,1881.
UNTTED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-FRANCIS M. WHITELAW, OF HARTWELL, OHIO.
PACKING AND TOY BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,026, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed October 5, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. WHITELAW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartwell, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Packing and Toy Box, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of packing-boxes which are of angular form and employ a telescopic cover, having the faces of both the body and cover ornamented with pictures of various persons and things, which register when the two sections of the box are together.
It consists in ornamenting the faces of the cover and body or the box with figures of human beings, beasts, birds, or things, and the cover in a corresponding manner, except in vignette form, so that when the two parts are together and the box closed the lower end of the cover will approach near the bottom of the body, at a point immediately above the lower extremities of the figures thereon, in position for registration, forming but one complete figure of the figures on both body and cover, on each of the faces thereof.
Other featurts of my invention will be fully set forth in the following:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l' is a perspective view of my improved box, showing the two sections of the same apart or the box open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box, (shown closed,) with the figures on the body and cover registering. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the same, but with different pictures from those shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
(No model.)
having one face of the cover broken open and in section to show the complete figure on the body of the box.
A represents the body or that part of the box in which the goods are to be packed. B represents the cover, sliding over and fitting the same. 0 0 represent complete figures on the faces of the body A. D D represent figures on the cover B, which, when it is down upon and encompassing the body A properly, register with the lower portions of the figures O O, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, making but one complete figure out of the two figures O D.
It will be seen that, owing to the full representations of figures on both thebody and cover of the box, either will present a finished appearance when separate and make two distinct toys, and when the two parts A and B are together to close the box the figures D on the cover will register with the figures O on the body, forming various combinations by chan ging the position of the cover on the body.
I claim- A box adapted for packing and for use as a toy or toys, having the body thereof ornamented with complete figures and the cover with figures which register when the box is closed, and form but one complete figure on each face of the box, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS M. WHITELAW. Witnesses:
JOHN E. J oNEs, EUGENE L. F'IaNKoEss.
