To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, ARTHUR NEWBOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorestown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Fans, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in toy fans and more particularly to a fan which is ornamental and attractive in appearance, and which comprises several members capable of manual manipulation to produce odd effects.

A further object is to provide a fan comprising a fixed member having an opening therein, and a rotary member which is exposed through said opening, said fixed member and said rotary member each having handles which when positioned together, the device may be used as an ordinary fan.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and ar rangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in front elevation illustrating my improvements in position for use as a fan. Fig. 2, is a rear view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, is a view in longitudinal section.

In constructing my improvements, I employ two members 1 and 2. In the present form, these members each are of circular form, and preferably of cardboard, but they may be otherwise shaped, and made of different material. To member 1, a handle 3 is secured by means of rivets 1 and 5, the former being centrally disposed through member 1, and the latter preventing any rotary motion of said member 1. This member 1 is provided with an opening 6, through which member 2 is exposed, and member 2 is cut out to form various figures or characters. In the present instance, the representation of a dog 7 and the representation of a duck 8, are formed in segmental openings 9 and 10 respectively in member 2, and these representations are preferably colored, and the intervening spaces between them are artistically ornamented. The face of/member 1 is also artistically ornamented, and it is my intention to have the several figures and ornamentation relating to the same subject, as will more fully hereinafter appear.

A handle 11 is connected by a rivet 12 with member 2 at one side of the center of the latter, and the rivet 4 above referred to extends through the center of member 2, and provides rotary mounting for said member 2. Suitable spacing washers 13 may be provided or may be dispensed with as desired.

In operation, handle 3 is grasped with one hand, and handle 11 by the other, and by manipulating handle 11, the various parts of member 2 are exposed through the opening 6.

With the construction shown, the impression will be given of a dog chasing a wounded duck, and to carry out this same theme, the body 1 will be decorated to represent a duck hunter shooting ducks on the water, and the spaces of the member 2 are ornamented to suit the general design.

The figures and scheme of ornamentation may be varied of course, to carry out the desired illustration, and of course the invention is not limited to the particular design shown, but I consider myself at liberty to change the construction in any way that falls within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a fixed member having an opening therein, a handle fixed to the fixed member, a rotary member back of the fixed men1- ber and exposed through said opening, said rotary member having figures thereon adapted to be moved past said opening, and a pivoted handle on said rotary member, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a fixed member having an opening therein, a handle fixed to the fixed member, a rotary member back of the fixed member and exposed through said opening, said rotary member having figures thereon adapted to be moved past said opening, a handle on said rotary member, said lastment-ioned handle pivotally connected to the rotary member at one side of the center of the latter, substantially as described.

8. As a new article of manufacture, a fan comprising a fixed member having an opening therein, a handle fixed to the fixed member, a rotary member back of the fixed member and exposed through said opening, a pivoted handle on said rotary member, said rotary member cut out forming the outline of figures which pass in regular order back of the opening in the fixed member, when the rotary member is turned, substantially as described.

4. As a new article oi manufacture, a fan comprising a fixed member having an opening therein, a handle fixed to the fixed memher, a rotary member back of the fixed memher and exposed through said opening, a handle on said rotary member, said lastmentioned handle pivotally connected to the rotary member at one side of the center of the latter, said rotary member cut out forming the outline of figures Which pass in reg ular order back of the opening in the fixed member when the rotary member is turned, substantially as described.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a fan name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
