NrTEo STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNEDOTT T. HEROLD, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
WINDOW SCREEN ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 249,764, dated November 22, 1881.
Application filed April 8,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, BERNEDOTT T. HEROLD, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented a new and useful Screen Attachment for WVindows, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is toprovide a window-screcnwhich is directly connected to the upper and lower sashes, and which can be made to follow the opening or closing of either sash. I accomplish this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a window and frame. vFig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the roller. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the roller. Fig. disadetail view, showing mode of attaching the screen to the window-sash. Fig. 5 is a view of ratchet at end of roller, and Fig. 6 is a detail View.
Similar letters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
A A represent the upper and lower sashes of a window provided with inyimprovemeuts. Within the upper and lower casings of the Window I place a cylindrical roller, B, havingsuitable bearings in the side casings. The interior of the roller is provided with a rod, (J, around which is coiled a spiral spring, D, one end of which connects with the roller and the other end is made fast to the central rod, 0. A ratchet-wheel, F, is placed upon the opposite end bearing of the rod, by which means a greater or less tension is imparted to the spiral spring within the roller when the ratchetwheel is rotated forward or backward. This ratchet-wheel is kept in position by a pawl, G. A slot, H, is made along the outer face of the roller, in which is dovetailed a rod or piece of wood, I, as shown, and by which the wire screen or meshed cloth J is attached to the roller. To the opposite end of the screen is connected a cross-bar, K, in the upper face of which are placed staples or hooks L, in which a sliding bolt, M, attached to the lower face of the lower sash and to the upper face of the upper sash engages, and by moving this bolt backward or forward in the catch-plate ,N, which is connected to the face of the sash, the screen is disconnected from the window, and the cross bar or rod K, to which the screen is connected, becomes a sill for the sash to rest upon. In practice this cross-bar is made the same in thickness as that of the sash, and follows it up or down in the same path or groove, while the screen follows in a slot made in the sill and the head.
By this means I provide a continuous-working screen, which follows both the upper and lower sashes in an automatic manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a window-sash, of the roller B, screen J, and cross-bar K, having upon its outer face books or staples L L, in which a sliding bolt, M, attached to the sash engages to connect with the screen, said crossbar K being adapted to form a sill for the sash when the screen is disconnected, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the sash A A, having bolts M, rollers B, having central rod, 0, provided with coiled spring D, screens J, and cross-bars K, having staples or hooks L L, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22d day of March, 1881.
BERNEDOTT T. HEROLD.
