This invention relates to eyelash curlers and more particularly to mascara and Vaseline applicators therefor. The mascara applicator comprises a casing adapted to contain a brush or sponge filled with the mascara or Vaseline and is movable with one of the parts of the curler to effect a wiping action of the mascara or vaseline on the eyelashes as the same are bent by the curler.

It is one object of the present invention to provide a mascara and Vaseline applicator in which provision is made in the applicator for the easy insertion and removal of different types of wiper element or the replacement of the wiper element for another wiper element.

It is another object of the invention to provide adequate shielding on the curler such that the eyebrow is kept from the wiping element while the curler is being operated.

It is still another object of the invention to provide connections of the wiper on the curler such that the wiper not only will receive its wiping motion from the vertical movement of the curler parts but also will be given an augmented wiping action to be certain that the full extent of the eyelash is wiped with the mascara or Vaseline.

According to the present invention, the applicator is made of sheet material and is so constructed along its forward edge as to receive an arcuate shaped brush or sponge rubber adapted to contain the mascara or Vaseline which is to be wiped upon the eyelashes. Indented portions extend inwardly from the top and bottom plate portions to retain the arcuate sponge or brush in place.

In one form of the invention, the brush or sponge is slid inwardly from one side of the plate portions in order to fix the same in place between the plate portions. In another form of the in vention, the plate portions are separable from one another and are retained in clamped fashion by a clamping nut against the top and bottom faces of the arcuate sponge or brush.

The applicator may be either connected to the curler for easy removal or can be more permanently secured to th curler. Where it is detachably connected projections are extended downwardly from the bottom plate portion of the applicator and are adapted to slide into U-shaped receiving clips on the vertically slidahle curler part. In another form of the invention, the applicator has a downwardly extending lug nearer to its outer end by which it is pivoted to a rearwardly extending bracket on the slidable curler part. Through this bracket a vertical motion is transmitted to the applicator as the curler is operated. Connected to the rear end of the applicator to give augmented movement to the wiper element While it is being raised; there is connected a link which in turn is connected to one of the movable parts of the curler and this link is pulled downwardly at the time the curler is operated. The wiper element is brought up to nearly the full height of a rearwardly bent shield which protects the eyebrow from becoming coated with the mascara or Vaseline being applied.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of an eyelash curler having detachably connected to it a mascare. and Vaseline applicator embodying the features of th present invention.

Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of the eyelash curler with the applicator removed therefrom to show the shape of the shield of the applicator.

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal cross sectional view, of the curler shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view looking into the arcuate wiping element and down upon the top of the applicator.

Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of an arcuate shaped sponge rubber element.

Fig. 11 is a side elevational view of an eyelash curler and of an applicator which has been connected to the movable part of the curler so as to be moved bodily therewith and which is also connected to the movable part for pivotal movement while being moved as effected by a link conat nected to its rearward end and pulled down as the curler parts are brought together.

Fig. 12 is a side elevational view of the arrangement, shown in Fig. 11, when the applicator has been pivoted upwardly at its wiping edge by the operation of the curler.

Referring now to Figs. 1 to 6, l5 and I6 represent handle portions of an eyelash curler which are pivoted, together by a pivot pin l1. These handle portions have loops IS in which the finger and thumb can be inserted. Extending upwardly from the handle portion l5 and coextensively therewith are side portions 2|, only one being shown, which are connected" together at their top ends by an arcuate shaped shield 22 conforming in shape to the eyelash and extending high above the ends and bent rearwardly to provide an adequate shield to prevent the eyebrow from being coated with mascara or Vaseline which is being applied to the eyelash. The bottom edge of Ethe shield as indicated at 23 (Fig. 3), serves as -;an edge against'which the collected eyelashes are :.pressed and over which they are bent up .or curl'ed.

"The other'handle l5 has'an extension or arm "24 to which the lower ends of a pair of movable or upwardly slidable parts 25 are connected. As the handle portions and It are drawn together, the parts -are moved upwardly. Connected 'a'crosstheir'ends is a rubber filled member 26:1of *arcuate shape and conforming to the contour hi the edge 23 of the shield 22 and to theshap'e of the eyelid. The outer ends of the rubber filled member '26 have a ring formation 2? slidable upon the side portions/2! of the handle 15. The rubber -'of'-the member 26 is indicated at 23 (Figs. 2 and '3) and by meansof this rubber engaging the *edge 23 with the eyelashes therebetween, the eyelashes are rolled upwardly over-the edge 23. 0n the vertically movable parts 25, there is provided U-shaped spring clips 3| adapted to receive downwardly extending rod projections 32 of a mascara and vaseline applicator 33, whereby to support the same ontheeyecurler for vertical movement with the parts 25 so that mascara and vaseline carried by a sponge 34 (Fig. 5) orabrush '35 (Fig; 6) will be wiped overthe bent eyelashes at thesame time that they are curled.

According to one form of the invention, the applicator 33 comprises a retaining piece 'or "holder for the wiping element 34 having upper and lower plate portions 36 and 3l. The forward edges of these plate portions are cut .away to conform to the shape'of 'the=forward wiping face or edge of the arcuate wiping element 34. On the top-plate portion and adjacent the wiping element, there is a downwardlybent indentation'38 "and-on the bottom plate portion 3? opposite to theindentation 38 of the upper plate','there is. an upwardly-bent indentation 39. These indentations-serve to retain the wiping element in place between theplate portions of the element holder. To "insert the wiping element, it is threaded through the'open side ends of the holder.

"Referring now particularly to Figs. '7 to 10, there is shown a modified form of wiping element holder. This holder has separable top and bot- =tomplate portions 4! and 42 with the-indentations 38 and 39 in them. plicator to the movable member for wiping action upon the eyelashes being curled between the shield and movable member, said plate portions having adjacent their forward edges opposing indentations adapted to lock with the wiping element within the holder.

4. In an eyelash curler having a shield and a movable member, a mascara and Vaseline applicator for eyelash curlers comprising a holder with top and bottom plate portions, said plate portions having forward edges conforming to the shape of the eyelid, a wiping element of similar configuration confined between the forward edges of the plate portion, and means for securing the applicator to the movable member for wiping action upon the eyelashes being curled between the shield and movable member, one side of the holder being opened to receive in threaded fashion the wiping element upon the same being located in the forward edges thereof and thereby in such manner-that the wiping element is removable from the holder.

In an eyelash curler having a shield and a movable member, a mascara and Vaseline applicator for eyelash curlers comprising a holder with top and bottom plate portions, said plate portions having forward edges conforming to the shape of the eyelid, a wiping element of similar configuration confined between the forward edges of the plate portion, means for securing the applicator to the movable member for wiping action upon the eyelashes being curled between the shield and movable member, said top and bottom plate portions being separable from one another to permit the insertion of a wiping element, and clamping means extending between the plate portions which when tightened will retain the wiping element in clamped engagement with the forward edges of the plate portion.

In an eyelash curler having a shield and a movable member, a mascara and Vaseline applicator for eyelash curlers comprising a holder with top and bottom plate portions, said plate portions having forward edge conforming to the shape of the eyelid, a wiping element of similar configuration confined between the forward edges of the plate portion, means for securing the applicator to the movable member for wiping action upon the eyelashes being curled between the shield and movable member, said means for securing the applicator to the eyelash curler including means for effecting an upward pivotal and. augmented movement to the wiping element towards said shield and movable member as the curler is operated.

In an eyelash curler having a shield and a movable member, a mascara and Vaseline applicator for eyelash curlers comprising a holder with top and bottom plate portions, said plate portions having forward edges conforming to the shape of the eyelid, a wiping element of similar configuration confined between the forward edges of the plate portion, means for securing the applicator to the movable member for wiping action upon the eyelashes being curled between the shield and movable member, said means for securing the applicator to the eyelash curler including means for effecting an upward pivotal and augmented movement to the wiping element towards said shield and movable member as the curler is operated, said securing means having a rearwardly extending bracket on a movable part of the curler, the holder having its bottom portion pivoted to the upper end of the bracket at a location near to its rearward end, and a link adapted to be connected between the rearward end of the holder and the movable part of the curler whereby as the curler is operated the rearward end of the holder is pivoted downwardly about the top of the bracket.
