WITNESSES @6a/dm MM ATTORNEY N, PETERS, Phamlmvgmphur. wnmngeon. o. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
AMASA C. POOLE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED SOFA AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 242,364, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed April 10, 1880. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AMASA C. POOLE, of Boston, in the county ot' Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valitable lmprovementin Cotnbined Soi'a and Bed 5 and I do hereby deel-are that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe ronstruction and operation ot' the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot'this specicatiomand to tite letters and iigures ot` reference marked thereon.
Figure l ot' the drawings is a representation of a rear view ot' my improved combined sofa and bed. Fig. 2 isa sectional view ot' part ot' the bottom-frame, showing the attachment of the mattress. Figsandetare sectional views of parts ot' the ends ot' the bed-bottom and frame, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section ofthe sofa-bed.
Thisinvention has relationto improvements in sofa-beds; and it consists in the novel arrangementand construction ofthe various devices employed, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, tlte letter A designates a shallow wooden box supported upon legs a, and constituting a receptacle t'or the bed-clothing.
B indicates a strong longitudinal wooden strip, secured to the back edge ot' the box A; and C Cf, the wooden frames hinged tltereto, and serving' respectively to receive the bottom and back portions of the mattress I). The frames C C are provided with springs S, the mattress resting thereon, and being secured to the said frames by means of eyes i on the mattresshengaging hooks t" on the said frame.
These eyes are arranged at the middle ot' the thickness of the mattress, which permits it to be turned over with either side up. At the ends ot' both of the frames C C are the short head sections D D, hinged thereto and adjustable to raise the head These sections are supported in the raised position by means of the braces c a', which braces are pivoted to the frames C C, extend through guides b on head sections D D, and, extending through slots cof said sections, engage with theirhooked ends d a metallic bar, e, extending across said slot, as shown. The braces are provided with handles e', by means of which they are disengaged from bars e, and the rests allowed to swing in line with the frames C C; or they may be disengaged simultaneously by means of a pull-cord,f, the ends ot' which are passed through perforations in the ends ot' said rests, carried through guidesf thereon, and attached to the said braces, as shown.
Cr indicate strong metallic braces, composed ot' the ections g g', tlte former being pivoted to the latter at or at about the middle of its length, so that they may be brought in line with each other or readily bent. 'lhese sections are pivoted, the one to the box or receptacle A and the other to the frame C', and when the latter is thrown back to form a bed the end of section g rests upon the floor and serves as a leg to the frame C. The section g is provided with a stopvhook. It, that limits the vibration ot' the back upward to the desired inclination with the bottom. The back ot' the sot'a is held against casual backward vibration, when raised, by means ota springcatch, fi, consisting ot' a spring,j, secured at one end to sec'ion g', and provided with a pin, t'", at its other end, that is projected through registeringpert`orations in both sections. This pin renders thejoint ot' the sections rigid, and consequently locks the back against vibration. These latches are simultaneously drawn back, and the back allowed to fall by means ot' a pull-cord, N, secured at its ends to said latches, and extending through guides between the braces and similar guides above the same,(lettered respectively n and n.)
lh-at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, wi h a sot'a having a hinged ltacl,C/, ofthe.swingingbracesG, cottiposed ot' sections gg', pivoted together an l to the back at the upper ends, the catches t, consisting ot' springsj and pins i", and a single pull-cord, N, connected at its ends to both catches, whereby one pull disengages both catches and permits the braces to be folded, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name inthe presence ot' two witnesses.
AMASA C. POOLE.
