IMPROVEMENT IN BED-LOUNGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,576, dated October 6, 1574; application filed February 2, 1874.

Be it known that we, THOMAS J. GANNoN and WILLIAM A. TIOKELL, both of Chicago, in the County of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BedlLoun ges, of which improvements the following is a full, clear, and exact ldescription, which will enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to apply the same to use, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing forming a part hereof', and in which- Figure l is a top or plan view of a bedlounge partly unfolded, and which embodies our invention 5 and Fig. 2, a front view of the same wholly unfolded.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts.

In the drawing, A represents the bottom or body of the lounge, supported on legs Vin the usual manner. B is the back, attached to the body by cleats a a; C the head, and D the seat or top, of the lounge. The seat, back, and head may be upholstered in the usual manner. The frame of the bottom is sufliciently deep to receive bedding and a slatted tray, A', which is removable. The seat-frame is so hinged to the forward side corners of the body as to be capable of being raised or unfolded and arranged in the position shown in Fig. l. The seat, when unfolded, is supported on legs, as usual, and is provided, preferably, with a slatted top, and the seat-.frame is also deep enough to receive bedding and a removable slatted tray, D'. E is a head-board or bolster, so hinged to the body, near its upper end, as to be capableA of being folded to and from the head C. E is also a head-board,

hinged to the seat-frame in like manner as the part E is hinged to the body of the lounge, and the parts E and EL are hinged to each other, as represented at a', so that the one will be moved bythe other, and so that the part E may be folded upon the part E when the seat is folded upon the body. F F are jointed arms pivoted to the seat-frame and to the board E', to retain the head-boardsA in their position when the latter are unfolded. The head G is so hinged to the upper end of the body of the lounge as to be capable of being unfolded and arranged in the position shown. When unfolded its top rests upon the floor, and the unfolded head-boards then rest against it, as shown in Fig. 2. c e are staples or eyelets on the lower edge of the head C. G is a yielding bolt, capable of a horizontally-sliding movement to and from the back, and its movement is limited by means of the pin c projecting therefrom into a slot in the frame of the bodyT of the lounge, as represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. e e are bent pins arranged to enter the eyes c c, and thus retain the head in its folded posit-ion. The head is released by pushing the bolt inwardly until the pins e e pass out of the eyes e e. The removable trays A and D may be upholstered and provided with springs, so that the lounge may be converted into a spring-bed, if desired. These trays, by being removable, render the beds made upon them capable of being readily removed from the lounge and aired and cleaned; but when a spring-bed is not desired other bedding may be arranged within the frames of the body and seat.

The lounge thus constructed is simple, cheap, and durable, and is readily converted to the various uses to which it is adapted.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

1. The folding head C, provided with the eyelets e e, arranged on its lower edge, in combination with the yielding bolt G, provided with the pins or catches c e, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. The folding seat D, provided with the head-board E hinged thereto, and with the jointed brace F F, pivoted to the seat and to the said head-board, in combination with the bodyA, provided with thehead-board E, hinged thereto and to the head-board E', all arranged and operating together substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.
