Description

(No Model.)
W B. S. FREEMAN.
Ornamental Chain Link.
No. 241,955. Patented May 24,1881.
F 1. F L L Witnessas. Inventor.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN S. FREEMAN, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
ORNAMENTAL CHAIN-LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,955, dated May 24, 1881,
Application filed April. 1, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. FREEMAN, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts have invented an Improvement in Ornamental Chain -Links, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of ornamental chain-links which are formed of wire bent into loops without the employment of solder; and it consists in a chain-link the wire of which is bent so as to form a central exte rior bight, with two side loops and two internal end hooks, whereby an ornamental chainlink may be made of. wire with free or open ends having all the strength of a soldered or solid link.
Figure 1 represents a length of chain formed of my improved links. Fig. 2 represents a modification of my improvement.
In the drawings, Fig. l, A represents my improved unsoldered wire chain-link, having in its construction an exterior bend or central bight, a, the two side loops, 1) b, and the two interior end hooks, d d. The side loops, 7) b, are made of such length as compared with their width that the loops of onelink may be passed transversely through the corresponding loop of another link, by which means the several' links may be grouped into a chain, as represented.
It is evident from the drawings that a strain applied longitudinally of the chain would tend to force the end hooks together. Therefore in this case no additional strength could be socured by soldering the ends of the wire to each other, the sides and ends of the hooks being supported and held in form by the exterior bight of the wire, thus making a decided improvement in this class of ornamental chain.
A modification of my improvement is shown in Fig. 2, where the ends of the hooks d d are extended and brought side by side downward to the adjacent sides of the two loops b 12, thus forming a wire chain with an improved ornamental effect.
The wire may be bent so as to form an angular exterior, and with angular loops and hooks, thus varying the ornamental efiect, and the merits of my improved link are greater strength than hitherto attained with this class of chain and capability of improved ornamental effects, as illustrated by that shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention- An ornamental chain-link formed of wire, with free or open ends, and having a central exterior bend or bight, a, the two side loops, 1) b, and the two interior hooks, d d, substantially as described.
BENJAMIN S. FREEMAN.
