UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BQVVHITNEY, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,971, dated .Tanuary 2'?, 1880.
Application filed August 26, 1ste.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEoReE B. WHITNEY, of Attleborough, Bristol county, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Ornamental Chains, of which the following' is a specification. v
My invention relates to ornamental chains, and is especially applicable to that class of ornamental chains in which, for the sake of variety and pleasing effect, metals of different colors are used to form the links of the chain.
The object of the invention is tol produce a chain of ornamental appearance, of strength in structure, and which, at the same time, may be economically manufactured.l
In the drawings hereunto attached, and
forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of asection of the chain. Fig. 2 is a side elevationof one of the larger links detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the center of the chain. Fig. 4 represents the edge of the chain. Figs. 5 and 6 represent different forms of the round links.
In all the figures the chain is. represented on a larger scale than that upon which it is ordinarily made. The chain is composed of two kinds of links, one of which (marked a) is represented as an ordinary round link of any suitable contour, with any kind of ornamental surface; or, instead ofthe roundlink, aslightlyflattened or other shaped link may be used.
` The main feature of the invention liesin the construction of the link 'which is marked in the dra-win gs b. This isformed, as represented, somewhat in the shape of the ligure 8. It is made by drawing a strip of metal of suitable width, by means of machinery, down to a double tube in sect-ion corresponding exactly to the shape of the link b as it is represented in the drawings. After the tube has been drawn out intothis shape, and of proper size, the links are formed by sawing the double tube transversely into pieces of a length adapted to the width of the link required. The form of this double link may be somewhat varied without departing from the spirit of my invention; but that which is shown is best adapted to the required eEect. After the double links are formed they may be conneoted by the links a a, one of which is placed in each of the loops of the double link.
The link a may be rounded or luted, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
I propose to make this chain of metal of l dilerent colors-as, for instance, the double link may be made of white metal, and the links a a may be 'composed of gold or goldplated stock.
The links may be put together and finished in a way well known to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is
An ornamental chain composed of the ordinary links a and the double links b, the latter made in the form of the ligure 8, said links being arranged alternately in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses..
GEORGE B. WHITNEY.
Witnesses O. E. WARD, L. L. BURRINGTON.
