la /1% M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY O. BIGNEY, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
ORNAMENTAL CHAIN.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No, 365,115, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed May 10, 1887. Serial No. 237,093. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIDNEY O. BIGNEY, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Chains; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention. has reference to an improvcment in the construction of ornamental chains, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a side view of the improved chain 011 an enlarged scale. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional View showing one of the connecting-links be fore the same is closed.
In the drawings, a a a are the links forming the main portion of the chain. They may be of any desired form or size, but are usually small rings, such as form the units in what are known in the art as roller chains.
b b are the connecting-links, usually bent from wire, and preferably of square or nearly square cross-section.
c c are short pieces of tubular wire.
Thelinks a a, connecting-links Z) Z), and pieces of tubular wire having been first formed, the connecting-link is passed through the link a, the tubular wire 0 is inserted into the next link a, and the ends of connecting-link b are forced into the piece 0 of tubular wire. The
corners of the square connectinglink bearing against the interior surface of the tubular wire firmly retain the ends, and they do not require to be secured by solder, thereby causing a large saving in labor, and also producing a chain more flexible than a soldered chain, while the same is equally as strong.
The tubular-wire pieces 0 inserted into the main links a greatly increase the ornamental appearance of the chain, and, as the wear comes largely on these pieces c of tubular wire, the durability of the chain is materially increased.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an ornamental chain, the combination, with the links a a and the connecting-links Z) I), of the tubular pieces 0 o, constructed to receive the connecting-link, as described.
2. The combination, with the links a a and connecting-links b I), of the tubular pieces 00. constructed to receive the ends of the connect ing-links, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the links a a and connecting-links b b, of the tubular pieces a 0, constructed to receive the ends of the connectinglinks and secure the same by frictional contact, as described.
SIDNEY O. BIGNEY.
