To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES L. HEELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at At- .tleborough Falls, Bristol county, State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvement-s in Ornamental Chain-Links, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the construction of links for ornamental chains without the use of solder; and it consists in one or more perforated heads combined with a frame having its parts arranged to engage the holes of the heads, the frame embodying in its structure a filling-piece which forms abutments for the heads, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

The accompanying drawings show various modifications of my invention, which I will now proceed to describe in detail, it being understood that other or additional shapes and arrangements of the parts may be devised, as circumstances or the views of constructors may render expedient.

In'the drawings, the letter A designates the link-heads, perforated with holes 0, and B the frame comprising the filling-piece 0.

Referring to the several figures, except Figures 10 and 11, the body of the frame is composed of two U-shaped pieces, B, of wire or sheet metal, which are arranged to extend in opposite directions, passing through the holes 0 of the heads, and the ends of which are bent or clinched on the outside of the heads, as at 8. Figs. 10 and 11 show the frame composed of four (more or less) sides, of diamond shape, united at the mid-length, and each having end prongs, s, which pass through the head-holes andareclinched. ThefillingpieceGisinclosed in the frame B in such a manner that the opposite ends of the filling-piece impinge against and form abutments for the heads, so that the heads are held in position by that meansnamely, in an inward direction-the like purpose being effected in an outward direction by the claws formed by the clinching of the 5 frame on the heads.

In the examples shown in Figs. 1 to 12, in-

clusive, the heads A are made in the shape of disks, while in Figs. 13 and 14 they are represented as being composed of a series of balls.

In Figs. 7 and 8 the U-shaped parts of the frame B are ornamented on the inner edges, while in the remaining figures they are shown as being left plain. When said parts of the frame are made of the form. shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the perforations o of the heads should be shaped as in Fig. 9.

Fig. 15 shows a link having a single head,

and Fig. 16 shows a head of angular shape. It will be seen that by the novel construction herein described no solder is required, while the parts at the same time are united in an effective manner.

It should be remarked that the filling-piece G can be omitted, and in that case the frame may be provided with shoulders, as at 6, Figs. 7,8, 10, and 11, to prevent the head from shifting inward; or other devices may be employed for this purpose.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- p 1. An ornamental link for chains, embodying in its structure the heads A, having the perforations o, and the longitudinal frame B,

passing through the perforations in the heads,-

and clinched in position on the exterior of the heads, substantially as described and shown.

frame and serving as abutments to prevent inward mo vements ofthe perforated heads on the frame, substantially as described and shown.
