2 Claims.
This invention relates to garments and refers particularly to a nurses uniform.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a dual purpose uniform of simple design and construction. Many hospitals have regulations concerning the type of uniform to be worn by nurses during and after their training periods and it is generally the custom to require different uniforms for probationers and nurses who have successfully completed a prescribed course of training, One of the schemes Widely used for this purpose is to require the probationer to wear colored dress-like uniforms with a white apron, which, however, has no bib. After successful completion of the probation period of training, the student nurse is allowed to wear the white bib. There were, therefore, three separate pieces to be contended with, namely, the colored uniform, the white apron, and the bib.
The present invention incorporates the blue or other colored uniform with the apron in a onepiece garment so designed as to simulate the appearance of an apron worn over a colored uniform.
The present invention also provides an improved manner of attaching the bib to convert the onepiece garment from the uniform of the probationer to that of the advanced student.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, this invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in .the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate one com plete example of the physical embodiment of the invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a uniform made in accordance with this invention and illustrating the way in which it is worn by the trainee;
Figure 2 is a back view thereof;
Figure 3 is a. front view of the uniform including the bib as worn by the advanced nurse;
Figure 4 is a back view thereof;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the bib, per se;
Figure 6 is a detail sectional View taken through Figure 2 on the plane of the line 66; and
Figure 7 is a detail perspective view illustrating the manner in which the bib is detachably secured in place.
Referring now particularly to the accompanying drawings, the numeral 5 designates a waist which is generally made of colored material to which a white multi gored skirt 3 is sewed. One of the gores of the skirt forms a front panel l, along the left side of which a placket opening 8 extends down from the waist. This opening is adapted to be closed by means of removable buttons or other suitable closure means.
The waist opens down the middle of the front and has the right side front sewed to the front panel. The left side front of the waist, however, is not sewed to the front panel of the skirt, but extends beyond the placket to underlie the front panel and the adjacent edge of the right front of waist.
Removable buttons or other suitable securing means are provided to close the front of the waist.
The back of the skirt has two pleats 9 formed therein and facing each other. The edges ill of these pleats are slightly spaced apart to create the impression of the adjacent longitudinal edges of a nurse's apron which extends all around the body.
A waistband or belt H has its medial portion sewed to the front panel as at [2, but is otherwise free from the skirt and waist. It is to be noted, that the attachment of the waistband or belt is only along the lower edge thereof thus leaving the top edge unsecured to enable the bottom of a bib to be tucked under it. The free ends of the waistband or belt are adapted to be secured together by removable buttons or other suitable closure means.
The bib [3 has straps l4 adapted to extend over the shoulders and cross at the back. The extremities of these straps have button ho1es 15 for attachment to buttons l6 carried by the waistband at the back. The lower part of the bib and. the topof the front panel have complementary fastening means as for instance, snap fasteners I! secured thereto b which the front of the bib is detachably secured to the top of the front panel.
It should be noted, however, that the point of attachment is such that the bottom of the bib and its attachment is concealed by the waistband.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that this invention provides a neat, simple uniform, well adapted for use by nurses, and that its novel construction obviates the need for separate aprons and by its substitution of a one-piece garment for a, two-piece garment not only simplifies the uniform but also makes it more comfortable.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A dual purpose uniform, comprising: a. skirt; a waist of contrasting material sewed to the skirt; a waistband secured to the front of the skirt along the lower edge of the waistband with the top edge of the waistband unsecured; a bib of the same material as the skirt but separate from the skirt and the waist, said bib having straps to extend over the shoulders and cross at the back; complementary means on the front of the skirt under the waistband and on the lower edge of the bib for detachably securing the lower edge of the bib to the skirt with the waistband covering the lower portion of the bib and said complementary securing means; and means for detachably securing the free ends of the straps to the waistband at the back so that the garment may be worn with the bib to provide one uniform and without the bib to provide another uniform.
2. A dual purpose nurses uniform, comprising: a, multi-gored skirt with one of its gores forming a front panel; two pleats facing each other and extending down the back of the skirt with the edges thereof slightly spaced apart to create the impression of the adjacent longitudinal edges of a nurses apron which extends all around the body; a Waist of material contrasting with that of the skirt sewed to the skirt so that the skirt and waist constitute a one piece garment; a waistband secured at its lower edge to the top of the front panel, the top edge and the end portions of the waistband being unsecured; means on the ends of the waistband for detachabl joining them; a bib of the same material as the skirt, said bib having straps adapted to extend over the shoulders and cross at the back; complementary securing means on the front panel of the skirt under the waistband and on the lower portion of the bib for detachably securing the bib to the skirt under the waistband; and securing means for detachably securing the ends of the straps to the waistband at the back.
