Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,832, dated May 3, 1859; Reissued August 30,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL A. DIETZ, of Brooklyn, New York, have invented and applied to use a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Lamps for Burning Oil, Fluid, etc; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon and making a part of this specification.
The nature and object of my invention consists in connecting, in a firm, and tasteful manner, the deflector, so called, to the chin;-- ney hand, without the use of solder, rivets, or the like tastening. so that the connection will not be injured by the heat, or the deflector be thereby loosened, and the com bustion of the lamp be rendered imperfect.
Figure 1. is a perspective view of the chim ney band and deflector as connected together. Fig. 2, is a sectional view of the same. Figs. 3. at, are separate views of the deflector and chimney band before connected together.
In the drawings A, represents the chimney band and 1%, the deflector. These are struck up by proper dies separately, and the former, as seen in Fig. 4, before" the latter is connected with it, has generally a smooth surface. After being so struck up, the deflector B, is slipped within the band A, and the two are placed between rotating dies, which sink or depress the band A, on each side of the edge 7), of the deflector, thus forming a groove 0, in the chimney band, into which the deflector edge 1), fits and by which the deflector is firmly connected to the band A. The partici'llar manrier however of forming or producing the groove in the chimney band to hold the deflector immaterial; the groove may be formed at the same time the chimney band is struck up and the deflector then be expanded into such grooveor the groove being struck into the chimney band A, the deflector may be fastened by the brazing of the band together; or the groove may be formed, and the deflector fastened in it in any convenient manner and for such purpose dies,'or any mechanical tools may be made use of. The benefits to be derived from. so connecting the chimney band and deflector are, that the heat of the flame will not destroy or weaken their close contact, as would be the case if the deflector was soldered to the chimney band, thus making the combustion of the lamp less perfect, and also rendering frequent repairs necessary, and also the connection can be perfected with much greater rapidity, and consequently with mo economy.
Air passes through. the holes (Z, (Z in band .i, both above and below the ilo B, to supply the flame. The band A, 1H hinged to the part C, attached to the p and containing the wick.
I am aware that, deflectors M been in the chimney bands of l mp and that such bands have been connected to the part of the lamp, holding the wick tube, by means of hinges, and therefore, I do not claim generally the use of the deflector in the chimney bands, or connecting them to the other part by means of a hinge but What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Securing or connecting the deflector B, to and into the chimney band A, by means of a groove 0, substantially and for the uses and purposes set forth and described.
