Description
W. P. NEWHALL.
Night Burner.
No. 45,5l3.. t Patented Dec. 20. 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VVALTEE P. NEWHALL, OF PEEKSKILL, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TOHGEORGE I?. GANSTER, OF NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NIGHT-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45.513, dated December 20, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER P. NEWHALL, ot' the village ot Peekskill, county of Westchester, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful improved device applicable to common coal-oil burners for producing a night-light; and I hereby declare that the following; is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specitication, in which-- Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved device, as applied to the wicktube ot' a common coal-oil burner in the position when used as a night-light. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of a complete burner, with my device in position when the latter is ont ot' operation. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of my device, shown from an opposite position as in Fig. l.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate correspending` parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a device applicable to and to be used in connection with the top end ot' the wick-tube of common coal-oil burners, by means of which at any time a portion ot' the top end ofthe wick and wick-tube may he covered from the outside of the chimneyholder, and it may be thrown out of operation at any time without taking the chimney ofi" the lamp, and a full light is obtained from the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and Vuse my invention, I wil now proceed to describe iis construction and operation with reference to the drawings.
A, Figs. l and 2, represent the wick-tube B, the ehimney'holder of a common coal oil burner.
O represents the device for producing the night-light, which device is composed of a plate, d, a cap, e, and the rod f. rlhe cap c with the top edge of the plate d, are made to correspond and form, when brought together, a cover over the top of the wick-tube, with the exception of a small portion at w, where a par-t ofthe top of the cap e is cut open. The plate d is made with lips on each end extending around and to tit the Wick-tube, and to which at a: the cap c is hinged. To a projection, Q, formed at the front portion of the cap e, is hinged the rod f, which extends through au opening, z, to the outside of the chimney-holder B, as shown in Fig. 2.
Now, it is clearly seen that by pressing with the linger on the end ot' the rodf, outside of the holder, the cap c is brought over the end ot' wick-tube and covers the wick and ents ott" the Haine, with the exception of the small portion at w, where the cap eis cut open, thus leaving a small lameburning, such as is capable for a night-light, as shown in Fig. l.
Now, by drawing or raising the end of the rod fthe cap e is brought ott' from the top of the Wicktube. Thus the full end of the Wick is exposed and the usual full light obtained, and the device for obtaining the nightlight is operated without disturbing the lamp.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
rlhe device C, applied to common coal-oil burners constructed of the cap e, plate d, and rod f, and for the purpose of being operated from the outside of the chimneyholder, as herein shown and described.
1WALTER P. NEWHALL.
