Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,714, dated March 19, 1861.
Be it known that we, JAMES HALE and J S. ATTERBURY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Oil Lanterns; and we do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this. specification, in which Figure 1 is a Vertical central section of our improved coal oil lantern. Fig. 2 is a sectional perspective View illustrating more plainly our improvement.
The same letters of reference in each of the two figures indicate corresponding parts.
Our invention relates to a lantern for burning coal oil without the use of an ordinary chimney, the lantern glass serving all the purposes of the chimney.
For use in connection with a lantern and lamp constructed substantially as hereinafter described, the nature of our improvement consists in a lantern glass with an outer flange blown or formed around its base, in combination with a horizontal extension or flange of the burner cap, in the manner substantially as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, A, represents a lamp or oil cup, with flat wick tube, placed on the base B, of the lantern, in any approved manner.
C, is a perforated cup of trumpet shape placed ontop of the lamp and around the wick tube.
D, is the toothed wheel for raising the wick.
E, is a burner cap with an oblong slit in its top and holes around its base; it is hinged or otherwise attached to the upper edge of the cup C, and sets upon it as represented. A horizontal ring flange or annular disk F, extends from the base of the cap to within a short distance of the circumference of the trimming or support C, of the lantern glass H, as represented.
I, is an outer flange blown or otherwise formed around the base of thelantern glass. This flange rests upon the annular disk of the cap when the parts of the lantern are put together, as represented.
The air to support combustion enters through the passages a, b, 0, of the trimming or lantern glass support, and finds its way to the wick tube through the perforations (Z, of the trumpet shaped cup which incloses the wick tube.
It will be observed that all of the air is compelled to pass through the trumpet cup and come in immediate contact with the wick-tube, as all chance for it to circulate between the outside of the trumpet cup and the inner side of the trimming or lantern support is cut off by the combined agency of the flange of the lantern glass and the annular disk of the cap.
\Ve are aware that it is not new to compel the air to pass directly in contact with the burner or wick tube, but we are not aware that this has been accomplished simply by the combined agency of a flange formed on the base of a lantern glass and an annular disk extending out from the burner cap. Thus effecting this object, greatly simplifies the construction and lessens the cost of lanterns and at the same time affords a free chance for the air which supports combustion to enter through passages 0, located above the flange of the lantern glass and annular disk and to have direct communication through the perforations of the trumpet cup, with the wick of the lamp.
It is very important to have the joint be tween the annular disk and the flange of the lantern glass closed tight, and as it is difficult to so fit the circumference of the disk to the circumference of the trimming or lantern support, in a manner to secure this result, it becomes necessary to accomplish it by the combined agency of the disk and flange. It also is necessary to have the disk of a smaller diameter than the trimming in order that the lamp may be readily connected and disconnected from the lantern.
Our arrangement for supplying and co'ndisk F Will form a very perfect joint. In formed around its base, in combination this manner the combustion Will be rendered with a horizontal extension or flange F, of 10 steady and perfect. the burner cap E, substantially as set forth.
