UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. F. SLOOUM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOISI LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,537, dated June 11, 1861.
To alZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. F. SLooUM, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coal-Oil-Lamp Tops or Burners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a top View of my improved lamp top, and Fig. 2 a vertical section through the same.
The object of my invention is to improve the burner or top of the coal "oil lamp by simplifying its construction, reducing its cost, and perfecting its operation, which object I effect by the following construction of the said top or burner.
I first make a top of the form shown upon the drawing by A, and in the inside of this top I fix three springs, as shown-by b, the springs being represented by a. These springs I arrange in the said top at unequal distances from each other as shown in Fig. 1. This top A I fit with a cover B of the form shown. This cover I perforate with small holes near the base thereof, as shown by e, and in the base or flange of the said cover I out three square openings, (Z (Z (Z,
to fit over the springs a, by which means the v said cover is held to its proper position, and always made tooccupy the same position on the top A.
The air to support combustion is supplied to the lamp through the openings (Z (Z (Z and c e, the openings 0 6 being wholly inside of the chimney, and the openings (Z (Z being partially covered by it, so that the supply of air to the lamp is not aflected by its motion when it is carried from place to place, by which means the lamp is prevented from smoking while in motion. The air as it passes through the openings cZ (Z (Z strikes against the springs a a and is diffused around the flame.
The tube to receive the wick is shown by D. In this however there is nothing new.
The springs a are made with a concave at v) to receive the bottom part of the chimney, so as to hold it upon the lamp, the springs yielding to let the chimney down upon the flange of the cover B, but it is manifest that the springs a will fit the interior of a plain cylindrical chimney, withouta flange or concave of special construction, and hold it securely in its place.
By this arrangement of top the chimney I can be removed with much greater facility than it can from the tops now in use and the cover can be removed in an instant, to trim or light the lamp; but the most valuable feature of the invention consists in preventing the lamp from smoking, thus perfecting the operation of coal oil lamps.
r,Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of three or more springs with a lamp top, arranged substantially as described, and for thepurpose specified.
