BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,304, dated February 1, 1881.

Be it known that I, ANsoN MILLs, of the United States Army, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a top view of myim proved buckle. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation. Fig. 4 is a section on line no at, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line yy, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a plan of the two pieces or blanks which make up one part of the buckle.

The buckle isa sheet-metal buckle, made up of two parts, A B, the one attached to one end and the other to the other end of the belt (J, a portion .only of which is shown. The part A is the hook portion and the part B is the eye portion of the buckle.

The part B is composed of an outer plate, a, in which the eye b is formed, an inner clam pbar, 0, and an intermediate toothed bar, 61. The plate a is'struck up from a blank such as shown at e in Fig. 6, which has breadth enough to leave side edges, 1 2, which may be turned down to meet the similar turned side edges, 3 4:, of the blank, (shown atf, Fig. 6,) which is struck up to form the two bars 0 d. The blank 6 is struck up so that the plate a shall have a concave and convex rib or bead, g, on three of its edges. The blank f is struck up so that the clamp-bar 0 shall have at its ends a recess, h, for the purpose hereinafter mentioned.

The part Ais formed of an outer plate, 1', an inner bar, j, and an intermediate toothed bar, It. The two bars j k are the counterparts of the bars a d, and the clamp-barj has recesses l at its ends corresponding to the recesses h in the bar 0. To the inner face of the plate 12 is bra-zed or otherwise secured the hook m, which engages the eye I) of the other part of the buckle, and said plate is struck up on three of its edges with a concavo-convex bead or rib, 'lt, this bead or rib being so formed and placed that when thetwo parts of the buckle are interlocked it will, on the side edges, fit over closely upon the corresponding beads or ribs 9 on the side edges of the plate a, as indicated plainly in Fig. 5. The beads or ribs 9 and n have a twofold function. They stiffen and strengthen the sheet-metal plate of which the buckle'is composed, and they also interlock when the two parts of the buckle are hooked together, so as to prevent lateral movement of said parts.

The buckle herein described has been designed with particular reference to its use with a woven cartridge-belt for which Letters Paten t of the United States No. 236,059 have issued to me. The said belt has tubular or tubular and corded selvages, as shown at o in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, and it is to receive these selvages that the recesses h and l are formed in the clamp-bars c and j. Were it not for 'this provision the clam p-bars would have contact only with the selvages. Consequently the belt would not be held with sufficient firmness. and too much strain would be broiight upon the selvages. To secure the ends of the belt, theend i's first entered through the opening between the toothed bar and the faceplate of the part A or B, to which the end is to be attached.- It is then passed back partly around the toothed bar and through the opening intervening between the toothed bar and the clamp-bar.

In uniting the two pieces which compose each part of the buckle the sides 1 2 and 3 4, which meet or lap, may be brazed or otherwise secured together. For greater strength they may be formed as shown at S T, Fig. '6, so that the abutting edges may .interlock, or they may be formed as shown at o 10, Fig. 7, each tongue v passing through the slot win the other, and the two tongues being then folded toward one another so as to lap and interlock.

Having describedmyinvention,whatIclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A sheet-metal buckle composed of the two parts A B, each provided with a toothed bar and a clamp-bar provided at its ends with recesses to receive the enlarged selvages of the belt, substantially as shown and described.

2. The hook and eye parts A 13, having their outer plates formed with concavo-convex ribs which interlock when the two parts are hooked together, and provided with tooth-bars and with clamp-bars formed at their ends with recesses, as and for the purpose hereinbeforeset forth.
