Description

(No Model.)
M. P. BRAY.' METHOD OF MAKING BUTTON HOLE PIECES.
No. 425,538.v PatentedApr. 15, LSQO.
lllllil BY ATT'Y- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS P. BRAY, OF ANSCNIA, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE WORCESTER CORSET COMPANY, OF WORCESTEIL MASSACHUSETTS.
METHOD OF MAKING BUTTON-HOLE PIECES..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,533, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed August 30, 1889.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MORRIS P. BRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Method of Making Button-I-Iole Pieces; and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has reference to certain new and useful improvements in the manner of making button-hole pieces for use in connection with corsets or corset-waists, and has for its object to produce a cheap and durable button-hole without the aid of exterior edge-binders.
With these ends in view my invention con sists in the details of construction and combination of elements such as will be hereinafter fully described, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan of my corded strip after it has been folded along the edges; Fig. 2, a similar view of such strip after one folded edge has been doubled over upon the opposite fold and stitched thereto; Fig. 3, a cross-section of the strip shown at Fig. l; Fig. 4., a cross-section of the strip shown at Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a detail of one of the sections out from the strip shown at Fig. 2; Fig. G, a similar view showing said Section out awayprior to the formation of the button-hole; Fig. A7, a detail of a completed button-hole piece, and Fig. S a plan showing a series of my button-hole pieces stitched within the edge of a corset-waist.
Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures.
I first take a strip A of cloth and run it through a folder, so as to leave one fold B considerably wider than the other fold C. I then cord the edge of the wide fold, as shown at D. The edge having the narrower fold is now .lapped over against the fold B and stitched thereto, as seen at E. i (See Fig. 2.) The line of stitching E entends centrally of the strip throughout its length, thus re-enforcing the strip along its middle and leaving the edges of the same number of plies. The strip is now Serial No. 322,460. (No model.)
cut into sections at the cross-dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the said sections are cut away at the center from the uncorded edge nearly to the corded edge, as shown at G, Fig. 6. The ends of the sections thus out away are bent around edgewise to bring the corded edge D into the form of a button-hole F, as shown at Fig. 7'.v A series of button-hole pieces thus formed are stitched within a garment along and across the open ends of the button-holes, as shown at Fig. 8.
VThe manner shown and described of folding the strip aords a very strong and superior button-hole; but I do not wish to be lim ited to, this particular way of folding, since in this respect my invention may obviously be varied.
It will be seen that by cutting away a portion of the strip I can get aspace between the sides of the button-hole greater or less, according to the width of the piece cut away.
I claim- 1. The method herein described of making button-hole pieces to be stitched within corset-garments and the like, the same consisting informing one wide and one narrow fold along the edges of a strip of cloth, cording the edge of the Wide fold, lapping the narrow fold over upon the wide fold, and stitching the two folds together, cutting the strip thus formed into sections, cutting away each Asection midway of I its length, and bending the cut-away portions edgewise to bring the corded edge into the form of a button hole substantially as set forth.
2. The method herein described of making button-hole pieces, consisting in folding the edges of a strip of cloth, lapping one of said folds upon the other and securing it thereto, cording on e of these edges, cutting away such strip nearly to the corded edge, and doubling said strip edgewise to bring the corded edge into the form of a button-hole, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature iu presence of two witnesses.
MORRIS P. BRAY.
