Description

(NovModel.)
J. F. LEWIS. Combined Cu'ltivatorand Scraper'.
No. 236,343. Ptented Jan. 4,-18'81.
I u Per s Fuero Asnmm'oN n c UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICEQ,
JAMES F. LEWIS, OF ROCKY HILL, KENTUCKY.
COMBINED ouLTlvA-roa AND scRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,343, dated January 4, 1881.
` Application led August 23, 1880. (Nomodel.) l
To all whom it may concern:r
Be it known that I, JAMES F. LEWIS, a. citizen ot' the United States, residing at Rocky Hill, in the countyot' Barren and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Cultivator and Scraper; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suehas willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to letters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a cotton-scraper and cotton-eultivator capable ot' adjustment and usein different agricultural pursuits; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement ot' parts, as will be more fully herenafter set forth.
The device is bolted together in such a manner that it may be readily taken apart and.
changed, as will be seen, from a one-horse cultivator to a two-horse scraper, cultivator, or plow. l Y
In carrying out my invention I employ the construction shown in the accompanyingdrawings, which forma part of this specification, and in which- Figure lis a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a top- Y plan view.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main beam, to which are securedthe handles A', as shown. From the forward end of the beam A extend braces b, which are secured to double plates B-,having perforations b', which receive removable bolts, which secure upon one side the beam D, and upon the other side the beam E.
C represents a cross-plate, having perforations c, as shown.
The beam D may be secured by pin-bolts, easily removable, to the inner holcsin the plates B and the outer holes in the plate C, when the .device is arranged for a two-horse cultivator, and reversed when arranged for a one-horse cultivat0r, and the same adjustability is true of the beam E.
The beam E is provided with two lateral lslots, e, by means ot' which the said beam may be set forward, as shown in Fig. 2, for a scraper and cultivator, or be set back for a cultivator, the perforated plate C c working in either slot c, as desired.
F represents the plow-shank, and j' the plow. These plows are readily removed, and are adapted to be interchanged to adapt the. 'device to the different purposes for which it is intended.
Cr represents a bifurcated standard secured one to each of the beams D and E by means of a bolt, which operates in the slotg and renders the standard vertically adjustable. Between the bifurcated extremities of the standard G isjournaled the colter H7 and a brace, H', extends from the shaft of the colter H upward and backward, and is secured to the beam, as shown.
From this description the operation is obvious. l
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described cultivator, consisting of the beam A, the perforated plates B C, the laterally-adjustable beams D E, the bifurcated slotted standards G, braces H', and colters H, the said beam E adapted to be adjusted backward or forward to form a cultivator or scraper, as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
`JAMES F. LEWIS. Witnesses:
H. C. BISHOP, W. T. KIDD.
