2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to garments, but more specifically to means for adjusting the girth of the waist portion thereof.
The main object of the invention resides in the provision of means associated with the waist portion of a garment whereby the girth thereof is adjustable, the adjustment not being accompanied by exposed or external bunching or pleat- A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a garment wherein the said means are simple, economical to apply to the waist region of a' garment and which do not result in pleating or bunching at the areas of adjustment. These objects and other incidental ends and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear in the progress of the disclosure and as pointed out in the appended claims.
Accompanying this specification is a drawing showing a preferred form of the invention applied to a garment such as a girdle and wherein corresponding reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a front plan view of a garment, such as a girdle, incorporating the invention herein.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary and enlarged fore: shortened view of the front of the waist portion of the garment shown in. Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of Figure lalong the plane 33 thereof. 7
In accordance with the invention and the preferred form shown a garment such as a girdle is indicated generally by numeral In, the said gar- .ment having the usual front central panel ll containing an inverted rubber panel portion 12 at the lower end, auxiliary front lateral panels [3 and l3a, a pair of elastic lateral panels M. The rear portion of the garment is conventional.
The waist portion of the garment is provided with a pair of lateralflaps l5 and I6 extending Flap I5 is IT, along the outer vertical edge, the said edge being reinforced by means of an inturned end [8 and a reinforcing strip l9 thereon. Lines of I stitching 20 and 2! are adapted to secure the inturned portion I8 and the reinforcing'strip I9 together, the lines of stitching 28 and 2i being interrupted atthe places where the fastening elements I! are inserted between the reinforcing strip I9 and the inturned portion I8.
The flap I5 is adapted'to project beyond an I open edge generally indicated by numeral 22 of.
an auxiliary panel portion 23 secured to the upper part of auxiliary panel l3. securement between portion 23 and the auxiliary panel l3 resides in an inwardly inclined line of stitching along adjacent and similarly inclined sides 24 and 25 of portion 23 andpanel I3, the said stitching affording a resilient and spaced connection between the members 23 and l3 and being formed in any suitable manner such as by fagoting indicated by numeral 26, or by the use of an equivalent'stitch. The auxiliary panel l3 adjacent secured edge 25 has preferably a line of stitching 21 to secure a turned in portion for reinforcing purposes, while portion 23 is provided with a line of stitching 28 for avsimilar purpose.
Hooks I! are adapted to engage any one of a plurality of spaced vertical rows of cooperating receiving members disposed on panel portion 23 for purposes of adjusting the girth of the waist portion of the garment. Thus, panel portion 23 is provided with outer horizontally disposed strips 29 and 30 and an intermediate and spaced horizontally disposed strip 3|, the said'strips being adapted to overlie a plurality. of vertically disposed spaced- strips 32, 33 and 34. The strips 29. 30 and 3| are secured to panel portion 23 by any means such as lines of stitching 35, 38 and 31 thereby forming from the strips 32, 33 and 34 engaging means for the hooks [1 between the edges of the said horizontally disposed strips as best shown in Figure 2. a
The central panel II is secured to auxiliary panel 13 in the conventional way as indicated by from the inner portion of the lower edge of flap i5 downwardly, the said placket being joined by means of a sliding fastener indicated generally a by numeral 48... On the opposing joining edge between central panel I l and auxiliary panel 13a there is no placket and the same construction exists between a flap. l6 and a portion 23' as exists'between flap l5 and portion 23.
As shown, panel portion 23 is provided with a lining 4| and an inner edge reinforcing strip' 42, said parts at the inner edge being joined by stitching 43. Thev oiiter edges of panel 23 and lining 4| are joined by stitching 44.
, When the garment is'put on the wearer, one or both of the flaps i 5 and I6 are secured by means of hooks l! in thefproper receiving members so that the girth fits the wearer. No matter what theadjustment the constriction or expansion in the panel portions 23 and/or 23 is compensated by the yieldability of the stitchings 24 and The means of.
thereby does not give rise to any external pleating or bunching at these regions. The resiliency afforded by the stitching 24 has both vertical and horizontal components and thereby provides the elimination of such external pleating and bunching in the garment.
I wish it understood that the invention herein is applicable to garments such as skirts or dresses and that minor changes in material, location and integration of parts may all be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a girdle, an adjustable waist portion cornprising a placket extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof, a placket flap, a panel v section adjacent the waist region and having an open inner edge underlying said placket flap an d an inclined lower edge, a main panel, yieldable means of connection between said panel section 'at the inclined edge and the main panel, and
means to adjustably secure the flap and panel section for proper girth fitting.
2. In a girdle, a placket at the waist portion extending downwardly from the upper edge thereof, a placket flap, a panel section adjacent the waist region and having an open inner edge underlying said placket flap, a main panel, a yieldable connecting member to join said panel section at a lower inclined edge to the main panel, and means to secure the flap and panel section for proper girth fitting.
CHARLES STONE.
