Description
(NoModeL) P. H. BUSBY.'
Glove.
No. 235,125. Patented Dec. 7', 1880.
I i I 'i Witneases Inventor- @W/ZQ? I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK H. BUSBY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,125, dated December 7, 1880.
Application filed July 10,1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. BUsBY, of the city and county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Gloves; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
In the ordinary process of the manufacture of gloves a small strip or welt of the material of which the'glove is made is placed at all the joints or seams. The object of this strip is to strengthen the seam. In cheaply-made gloves withouta welt the threads are apt to draw out of one of the meeting-edges of the material. In the kid or leather of which gloves are usually made the material is only colored on one side; but even if colored on both sides the welt is sure to show of a different color, since it is necessary to trim it after it is put in place, and the fresh out shows the natural color of the flesh of the material. Moreover, in trimming the welt considerable loss of time and some expense are entailed, as it must be carefully done or there is danger of cutting the glove in the process, since it cannot be done until the glove is finished. These objections I propose to overcome by placing a doubled strip or welt of the same color and material between the seams of the gloves in such a manner that the colored surface only will show, and the necessity of trimming will be obviated, as is more fully described in the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a view of my glove. shows the welt.
The glove A is made in the ordinary way, and of the common materials used for such purposes.
To carry out my invention I take a strip of the same material and color of which the glove is formed and double it, as shown at b, the col- Fig. 2
ored portion remaining outside. This doubled welt is placed between the seams, so that the edges a of the material where the seam is formed will come against the sides of the doubled welt, as shown. The threads which pass through these edges also pass through the doubled welt, so that said edges are drawn up tightly against the sides of the welt. The welt then forms in appearance a sort of rib, which covers and protects the seams from the entrance of dust ordirt. By placing the double thickness in the position shown all necessity of trimming is obviated, since the doubled welt is not-allowed to project too far, being L properly laid in place. The glove is alsostrengthened by the continuous double welt, there being so great a thickness between the seams through which the binding thread passes. \Vith the glove made in this manner the welt does not present an unsightly appearance in the glove, the welt being of uniform color with the glove itself, instead of showing the natural color of the material, asis the case with a single strip after trimming.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improvement in the manufacture of gloves consisting of inserting a welt of a double piece of the same material and color of the body, the edges of which come on the inside, whereby a uniform color of Welt and glove is maintained and the necessity of trimming avoided, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my Witnesses S. H. NoURsE,
FRANK A. BROOKS.
