To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB N. SOHWANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seams, of whichthe following is a specification, reference be ing had to the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part thereof.

The objects of my invention are to provide a seam for joining or uniting pieces of flexible material, such as the uppers of shoes, by means of which said sections may be united by a simple and inexpensive construction and whereby said pieces of flexible material may be joined by a corded seam to provide greater strength and durability at said seam.

A further object is that by the use of a cord the seam may give an ornamental appearance.

The term shoe as used in this specification is intended to comprehend boots, shoes, slippers and other articles of footwear.

sections of the uppers of which and the lining embody my invention; Fig. 2 represents an edge view of a section of the material used in the uppers of shoes showing the method of laying the material together and imposing the cord thereon preparatory to stitching and shows the line of stitching through the cord and the material; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of two sections of material illustrating my method of joining or uniting them and shows in addition to the stitching which unites the sections an ornamental I'OW' of stitching through one of the sections and the two unturned edges which lie on the inside of the shoe uppers.

In the drawings, 1 represents a shoe; 2 and 3 the seams or points where the sections of the shoe upper are joined; 4 is the edge of the upper where the lining and the outside or upper of the shoe are joined by seaming.

In making the seam which unites the sections of uppers, a cord 5 is first laid on the line of the seam and the seam is stitched through and through by stitching 11, as shown in Fig. 2, joining the cord and the two sections of the upper. tially in the same plane as shown in Fig. 3, the cord 5 imposed on one of the sections causing a rounded'portion 6 to be thrown out as'illustrated in Fig. 3. Thereafter, the ends 12 and 13 are folded down upon the sections 9 as shown in Fig. 3, andsupplemental or ornamental stitching 7 inserted. By inserting the supplemental or ornamental stitching 7 as shown in Fig. 3, the section of upper 9 has a rounded portion 6 maintained therein against distortion.

The seam at the edge of the top of the upper, while of the same general character as the seam which joins the sections of upper, is folded somewhat differently after the stitching which joins it is inserted.

By inserting the cord 5 in the bight of the seams, I gain two objects. In the seam as illustrated in Fig. 3 the outside portion of the seam presents a rounded, ornamental appearance, being shaped around the cord, and the cord being a part of the seam 11 and non-stretchable, prevents the stretching of the shoe upper at the seam, as is apt to occur in shoes made in the ordinary way.

I do not wish to be confined. to the exact form of the seam as shown in the drawings as the method of folding the edges may be varied as circumstances may require. My invention relates to the method of joining the, sections of uppers, and the upper and lining by stitching which is not visible from the outside of the shoe and reserving the right to the use of a supplemental or ornamental row of stitching when found desirable. I Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A seam for joining pieces of flexible material, comprising a cord, a line of stitching passing through said cord and the pieces of material to be united, the edge portion of one of said pieces of material being folded around said cord and upon itself, the edge portion of the second piece of material overlapping said cord and said first mentioned folded portion, and a sec- 0nd line of stitching passing through the two thicknesses of said first mentioned folded portion and through said over-lapping portion.

A seam for joining pieces of flexible material, comprising a cord, and a line of stitching passing through said cord and the pieces of material to be united, the edge portion of one of said pieces of material Y being folded around said cord and upon itself, the edge portion of the second piece I 1 of material overlapping said 'co'rd andsaid first-mentioned folded portion.

A seam for oining pieces of flexible ma terial, comprising a cord, the edge portion of one of said pieces of material 'loeing folded around said cord and upon itself, the edge portion of the second piece of material overlapping said cord and said folded portion, a line of stitching passing through one thickness of said folded portion and through said overlapping'portion, 7
