To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MERRow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morrow, in the county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Trimmings; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to improvements in tapes, strips, or bands of material such as are adapted to be attached to or formed into garments, upholstery, and other articles, and to give a substantial finish, or for other useful or ornamental purposes. Articles of this character as heretofore provided for the market have been plain and unsightly strips or tapes, or where made ornamental the ornamentation was woven in the goods, thereby sacrificing strength and wearing qualities of the body of the strips and making said strip more or less elastic, which is undesirable. In accordance with my present invention I provide a strip-body of plain straight woven fabric of sufficient strength for the purpose for which it is designed, and to this strip I apply ornamental stitching which passes from a point in proximity to one edge clear around the opposite edge of the strip, the stitching penetrating the strip to hold them in their proper relation, but the line of penetration being so close to the edge opposite that around which the stitches pass as to practically conceal the entire width of the body portion of the strip.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a strip or trimming made in accordance with my present invention, the stitches being shown separated to avoid confusion. Fig. 2 is a transverse section with the stitching similarly exaggerated.

The letter-A indicates the body portion of the trimming, tape, or strip, which may be of any material having sufficient body and strength for the purposes intended.

B indicates the covering or ornamental stitching which incloses practically the entire body portion, being passed away entirely around one edge of the body portion and being passed through said body portion in close proximity to the opposite edge. It will be noted that while the stitching formsa sheath for the body portion and entirely conceals it on the face side each individual stitch is held against longitudinal movement on the body portion by penetrating the same, and thus not only is the relation between the two maintained, but the integrity of the remaining portion of the covering is preserved should any of the stitches become worn or broken.

Obviously either one or both edges of the body may be selvage, rough or cut, and it may be of any suitable material-for instance, cloth, braid, tape, leather, straw, &c.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein described article of manufacture consisting of a narrow body-strip, having an ornamental covering for one face formed by overseaming stitching penetrating said bodystrip in close proximity to one edge whereby the face of the strip adjacent said edge is concealed thereby, the stitching passing thence across the face of the body-strip and around the opposite edge, whereby the ornamentation covers the face of the bodystrip throughout its entire width and is itself held in position by the stitches which penetrate the body strip; substantially as described.
