1 Claim. (6.145 -34) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hack-saws, andhas for its primary object to provide a pair of telescoping frame sections adapted for securing the blade in position thereon and embodying means for locking the sections of the frame with the blade under tension. A further object of the invention is to provide a blade holder by means of which the blade may be attached in a position either vertically or horizontally with respect to the frame.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and for engaging in the opening of the blade and a similar hook'member' I5 projecting downwardly from the underside of 'the connector, the hook members l4 and [5 being spaced longitudinally on theiconnector', as shown to advantage. in

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the
numeral 5 designates the hack-saw frame generally which includes an outer section 6 and an inner section I, the outer section being of substantially L-shaped construction and the inner section including a tubular member 8 to the rear end of which is secured the handle 9. Extending downwardly from the tubular section 8, adjacent the handle, is a supporting bracket I0 having a tubular guide H at its lower end within which is slidably mounted a connector I2 for the rear end of the blade I3.
The guide II is of square shape in crosssection and is provided on its front portion, at one side thereof, with a hook member l4 adapted Accordingly, it will be apparent that the blade may be supported in a vertical position with rein a horizontal position by attaching the blade to the hooks l5 and 23. Positioned in the tubular frame member 8 is a coil spring 24 engaging the rear end of the frame member 6 for projecting the same forwardly.
To the lower edge of the rear end of th frame member 6 is formed a notch 25 engageable by a pivoted dog 26 pivotally mounted on a pin 21 extending transversely between a pair of spaced 6 with respect to the tubular section 8.
Also pivoted on the pin 21 is a lever 39 of channel shape in cross-section and. adapted to straddle the upper edge of the tubular member 3 for movement into a position longitudinally of the frame, as shown to advantage in Figure l of the drawings. The lever is pivoted rearwardly of its front end and is provided with a pin 3! positioned forwardly of the pin 21 and a link 32 has its rear end pivoted on the pin 3|; To the front end of the link 32 is pivotally attached a cam link 33 having its cam end 34 extending upwardly for engagement with the lower edge of the telescoping part of the frame member 6.
A U-shaped clamp 35 straddles the frame memher 6 and is pivotally connected at its lower end to the cam link 33, as shown to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawings.
A leaf spring 36 has one end attached to the underside of the link 32 adjacent its front end and the spring is provided at its free end with a bifurcation 31,-which extends upwardly for receiving theframe member'G, the upper end of r the spring bearing against the clamping member 35for urging the same in a direction toward the I front end of the tubular member 8.
In the operation of the device, by raising the lever 30 upwardly,the rear end of the link 32 is moved downwardly and rearwardly, thereby swinging the cam end 34 of the cam link 33 away;
from engagement with the frame section B and thus releasing the clamp 35. The spring 24 then functions to project the frame section -6 forwardly to spread the frame sections apart whereby to exert tension on the blade l3. When the lever 30 is lowered the rear end of the link 32 is raised uwardly and moved forwardly, thereby moving the cam end 34 of the camlink as into engagement with the frame section 6 and causing a locking engagement of the clamp 35 therewith. The spring member It on the connector l2 also urges said connector rearwardly to apply tension to the blade I3 in a manner as will be apparent.
It is believed the details of construction, manner of operation and advantages of the device will be apparent from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is:
A hack saw frame comprising a pair of telescoping frame members including spaced parallel parts, means for detachably connecting the ends of a saw blade to said parts, means for clamping the frame members to each other to secure the same in adjusted position, said last-named means comprising a lever pivoted to one frame member, a clamp loosely carried by the other frame member, links pivotally connecting the lever and the clamp and including a connecting link and a cam link having a cam at one end, said cam link being pivoted adjacent its cam end to the clamp and pivoted at its other end to the connecting link leading to the lever and adapted for movement of said cam end into binding engagement against the said other frame member upon a predetermined movement of the lever, and a leaf spring carried by said connecting link and engaging the clamp to maintain the latter against canting during movement thereof on the frame.
