ROPE" CUTTER.
Application led (,)ctober 30,` 1924; Serial No; 746,'856;
The present invention relates to a cutting device designed particularly for cutting rope as it is being dispensed in a hardware store or the like.
The principal objectof the invention is to provide a device of this nature which may be easily operated for severing the rope, one which is possessed of a very simple and eflicient construction, and which is reliable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, du-V rable, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as wi'll be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device embodying the features of my invention, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof portions being shown in section.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that l designates a plate which acts as a support and is preferably of an elongated rectangular formation having a slot 2 adjacent the lower end thereof. A pair of guides 3 and 4; are fixed to the plate 1 by means of bolt 5. A ledge block 6 is mounted on the plate and is provided with a slot 7 eX- tended therethrough and alined with the guides 3 and 4. This block 6 is disposed between the guides. A saw 8 is fixed between two rods 9. These rods 9 are slidable through guides 3 and 4 and through the slot 7 of the ledge block 6. The saw 8 is removable into the slot 7 of ledge block G. rIhis saw 8 is substantially right triangular in formation the hypotenuse edge thereof having saw teeth 10 arranged thereon. Filler strips 11 are positioned between the rods thereof and below the saw 18. A U- shaped member 12 has the intermediate portions of its legs pivoted to the lower ends of the rods 9 by means of a bolt or like pin 13. The terminals 14 of this member 12 are in the form of eyes. Eyes 15 are formed on the end of the bolt 5 which pass through the guide 4. Springs are attached to the respective eyes 14 and 15 holding the rods 9 in their raised position as shown in the drawing that is with the saw 8 out of the slot 7 of the ledge block 6. A link is attached to the `U-shapedv member 12 and to a connecting member 18 being U-shaped so as to straddle the intermediate portion of a lever 19 fastened to the lever by means of a 60 bolt 20. One end of this lever 19 passes through the slot 2 and is pivoted by means of a suitable bracket 2l. The free end of the lever forms a foot plate 22 so that the lever is in the form of a pedal.
A strand of rope which it is desired to cut may be placed across the ledge block as indicated in dotted lines at 23 in Figure 2 and the pedal 19 engaged to be swung downwardly thereby pulling downwardly on 7i1E the rod 5 and causing the teeth 10 of the blade 8 to saw the rope 23 in an easy and efficient manner. rIhe spring 16 will be stretched during this operation so that when the foot is released from the pedal the rods 9 and the blade 8 will move upwardly as the springs retract.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that I have devised a rope cutter which may be very easily operated, cheaply manufactured, durable, effective under all conditions, and which is not readily liable to get out of order.
It will also now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction of 35 a rope cutter which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have in the present instance shown and described a preferred 9U embodiment of it which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
While I have described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A cutting device of the class described including in combination a supporting plate,
a pair of guides disposed on the supporting plate in alinement with each other and in spaced relation to each other, a ledge block mounted on the supporting plate between the guides and provided with a slot registering with the guide, a pair of rods slidable through the guides and the slot of the ledge block, a saw blade mounted between the rods, a U-shaped member having the intermediate portion of its legs pivoted to the ends of the rods and its terminals in the form of eyes7 a pair of springs attached to the eyes and to one of the guides for normally holding the rods in raised position with the blade out of the slot of the. ledge block, a link attached to the U-shaped member, said supporting plate provided with a slot in its lower end, a pedal extending through the slot in the supporting plate and pivoted thereto, means for attaching the link to an intermediate portion of the pedal whereby the pedal may be swung downn Wardly to pull upon the rod "and thus force the blade into the slot of the ledge block to sever a rope which may be mounted thereon, said springs being thus expanded so that they Will return the rods and the blades to their initial positions when the pedal is released.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
JOHN H. KOEHN.
