My invention relates to head bands-for use in connection with bathing caps and has forits object to keep water from getting under the bathing cap and wetting the hair of swimmers, particularly women. I am aware of the fact that other devices have been employed for this purpose and this application is an improvement on my Patent No. 1,501,591, issued July 15, 1924'.

The invention of my aforesaid patent has been continuously and extensively in use since before the date of application for the patent and has been generally effective for keeping water away from the hair of wearers. My improvements have to do with rendering the band more certain of performing the function of keeping out water, particularly on the back of the neck of the wearer, more comfortable in the wearing of the same, particularly in reference to the ears of the wearer, easier to apply to the head of the wearer and constructed better to resist strains and to have durability and a long life.

In carrying out these improvements it is one object of my invention to provide a back flap wider than the average width of the band having mounted therein along its lower. edge a compressing member such as a small rubber tube which will engage and find a seat along the nape of the neck and will enter into the hollow at the nape of the neck just below the hair to provide a complete sealing contact.

It is a further object of my invention to form the band curved or with portions extending away from said central portion and with cutout parts adapted to surround the ears so as to leave the ears largely exposed.

It is a further object of my invention to provide a reenforcing strip down the central portions of the ends of the bands having thereon the eyes and sockets respectively of snap fasteners together with means for permitting one end of the band when wrapped around the head to be inserted through the other end of the band to bring the snap fasteners into operative engagement.

The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the description thereof hereinafter given, and the features by which the advantageous results above referred to are secured will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

As illustrated the band comprises end portions l and II with an intervening central portion l2 which, as shown, is wider than the end portions I0 and II and is separated-from them by cut-out or notchedportions l3'and I4; The

central portion 12 is provided with 'a curved top edge I and a straight bottomedge 16. At the top edge [5 there is applied to the member 12 a reenforcing strip II, this strip being on the outside of the band as worn. The outer portions of the parts of the band I0, I l and 12 except for reenforcing elements are composed of chamois and the central member l2 has a second ply l8 of chamois between which is a layer of impervious rubber material I9, as in my aforesaid Letters Patent. In the construction of thisapplication at the lower edge N5 of the two plies l2 and I8 and intervening strip of rubber as sewed together I secure a second strip having thereon a compressible extension member 2|, preferably in the form of a hollow rubber tube. The part 20 is formed with extensions 22 and 23 along the adjacent edges of the notches l3 and I4, as clearly shown in Fig.3. The reenforcing band I! is carried around the ends of members Ill and II at 24 and 25 and form continuations along the inner side of members l0 and II, as indicated at 26 and 21 of Fig. 4, and the central edge portion 28 is shortened so as to turn up towards the extension 20, 2| as indicated at 29 in Figs. 3 and 7. Central reenforcing strips 30 and 3| are formed along the center of members l0 and H, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 8 and in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The member H, as best shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, comprises two overlapping parts 33 and 34 which are secured and 31 of Figs. 3, 4 and 5.

In assembling the band it is'first placed upon the back of the head with the pushed-out part 20 across the nape of the neck and the shortparts 22 and 23 along the sides of the nape. This has the great advantage of so enclosing the hair and gripping and following the lines of the face and head, particularly at the nape of the neck, and on each side thereof sothat 'water is efiectively prevented from getting into the hair at all.

I claim:

1. A head band for use under bathing'caps, comprising a band member formed with a central portion and two side portions angularly disposed thereto, said central portion being formed of outside plies of material and a ply strip of rubber between them, and a resilient extruded member attached to the inside of the central member at the bottom edge thereof outside the plies and rubber and embodying a compressible filler.
