. ANNA L. GAG-E, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
HEADBAN'D FOR USE IN CONNECTION WITH BATHING ,CAPS.
Application filed November 5, 1923. Serial No. 872,776.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANNA L. GAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Headbands for Use in Connection with Bathing Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to head bands for use in connection with bathing caps. Bathing caps as ordinarily constructed do not effectively prevent the entrance of water into the insideof the cap, while the wearer is in the water. The result is that the bather or wearer of the cap is subjected to considerable annoyance and discomfort caused by the length of time required to dry the hair after.
bathing. I am aware that it has been proposed to provide the edges of bathing caps with means to prevent the entrance of water into the cap, but such devices have only a limited contact with the head of the wearer, so that discomfort is caused if the device is drawn sufliciently tight to prevent passage of water, and such devices are made as a part of the cap, and are not, therefore,
adapted for ready application to ordinaryv bathing caps. An object, therefore, of my invention is to provide a band having a broad surface for surrounding the head which will readily adjust itself to the particular conformation of the head when applied prior to the donning of the bathing cap. Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be readily constructed as a separate article of manufacture, and then used in connection with customary bathing caps.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description, and the novel features of my inventive idea will be particularly,
pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the application of my invention in different forms, Fig. 1 is a side elevational view showing the band applied to the head for use in connection with a bathing cap, this view showing a portion of the cap broken away. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing one form of the device. Fig. 3 is a view showing the manner of fastening this form of the device around the head. Fig. 4 is a view in cross section on the line 44 of -Fig. 2. -Fig. 5 is aplan view of another form of the device. Fig. 6 is a view showing the manner of fastening the latter device around the head. Fig. 7 is a view in cross section on the line 77 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a plan view of a slightly modified form. Fig. 9 is a view in cross section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 8/ Fig. 10 is a. view in cross section on the line 10-10 of Fig. 8.
Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show a band formed of chamois which is made into a flat casing 10 containing a layer of resilient material which is preferably sponge rubber indicated at .12; In this form of the invention, the middle portion of the casing indicated at 14 is left without any filling of the sponge rubber, and the edges of the end portions of the casing are leftfree or unattached to each other to provide ventilation openings 16. Secured to the ends of the casing are tapes 18. In using this form of the device, the unfilled portion 14 of the casing is placed on the forehead and the two filled portions are brought back over the ears, as shown in Fig. 1, crossed at the back of the head, and then brought forwardly so that the tapes 18 can be tied into a knot 20 over the forehead as shown in Fig. 3.
Figs. 5, 6, and 7 show a band formed of chamois which is made into a fiat casing 22 containing a layer of sponge rubber 24. To the ends of the casing, strips 26 of chamois are attached, these strips preferably consisting of a single thickness of the material. The ends of the casing 22 are left partly opento provide ventilation openings 28, as indicated in Fig. 7. Secured to the outer ends of strips 26 are tapes 30. In using this form of the device, the middle portion of the casing 22 is placed on the back of the head and the end portions of the casing are brought forward over the ears, the strips 26 being crossed over the forehead and brought around back of the head, and then forwardly so that the tapes 30 can be tied into a knot 32 over the forehead as seen in Fig. 6.
Figs. 8, 9, and 10 show a band formed of chamois which is made by stitching together a plurality of pieces 34 of chamois whlch produced at this side of the band. The ends of the casing 36 are left partly open so as to produce ventilation openings 44 as shown in Fig. 10. Secured to the ends of the band are tapes I6 by means of which the device may be secured to the head in the manner previously described. The stitching holds the sponge rubber in place when the device is wrung out after being in the water.
The operation and advantages of my invention will now be obvious. A casing of chamois is provided and a layer of resilient material such as sponge rubber is placed in this casing in such manner that the portion of the casing containing the sponge rubber will fit snugly around the head except over the forehead, at which place there will be only the unfilled chamois when the device is wrapped around the head. In use, the chamols has a comfortable feeling over the forehead, and no filling is required at this place in order to make a water-tight closure when the bathing cap is pulled over the band which has been secured in lace on the head. For other portions of t e head, the sponge rubber insures a water-tight closure on account of its fitting into any irregularities. The chamois after being used in the water will dry without becoming stiff and the interior of the casing will readily dry out on account of the ventilation openings which are provided. Since the band is entirely se arate from the bathing cap, it can be use in connection with any bathing cap of the usual construction.
I claim:
1. A separate head band for use in connection with bathing caps comprising a casing of chamois containing a layer of resilient material, said band having free ends adapted to be fastened together for securing the band in place on the head.
2. A separate head band for use in connection with bathing caps comprising a casing of chamois containing a layer of s onge rubber, said band having free ends a apted to be fastened together for securing the band in place on the head.
3. A separate head band for use in connection with bathing caps comprising a casing of chamois containing a layer of resilient material, the latter being of such extent as to fit around all portions of the head which are back of the forehead whereby a covering of unfilled chamois is provided for the forehead.
4. A head band for use in connection with bathing caps comprising a casing of chamois containing a layer of resilient material, the ends of said casing having ventilation openings.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
ANNA L. GAGE.
