UNITED STATES PATENT FFlCE 1 GARMENT Florence z. Walsh, Hyde Park, N. Y. Application June 15, 1939, Serial No. 279,379
1. Claim. (01. 2-92) This invention relatesto improvements in garments .and more-particularly to garments'of the waist type:
The primary object 'of the invention is to provide a garment of 'the above mentionedcharacter known in the art as a dickey which includes an easily removable waist capable of being worn underthe coat of a suit or ensemble.
A further object of the invention is to provide a waist garment. or dickey having elastic waist encircling straps .which prevent the front and back portions of the dickey from sliding upward and becoming unsightly in appearance.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a waist garment or dickey having a collar and'neck opening for allowing the easy application and removal of the garment. H
Other objects and advantages of' the invention 'will become apparent during-the course of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawin wherein,
'Figure 1' is a front elevational view of the dickey, illustrating the same in position on a wearer,
Figure 2 is a rear elevatlonal view of the same I illustrating the dickey in position on a wearer and showing .the manner in which the back por- I tion is applied,
' dickey are secured together by the elastic side straps, and, l e
a Figure 5 is -a, fragmentary front elevational view showing a modified collar construction.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustratingthe invention and wherein like ref- .erence characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the reference character 6 will be employed to generally designate a waist garment or dickey including a front portion 8 and a back portion in connected by shoulder strapv portions ll forming a neck opening l3 having a collar l5 of the soft fold typ formed of a different material than the back portion ill but it has been found desirable to form the front and rear portions of a good grade The front portion a of the dickey may be of knitted or woven material presenting a pleasing appearance to the eye.
Secured to the lower'portion of the front and back B "and I0, respectively, is an elastic strap ll having its ends stitched or otherwise secured in place as at I8. The opposite side is provided with a pair of elastic straps l9 and 2| secured to the front 8 by means of stitches 23 and to the back [0, as at 25, respectively. A hook fastener 2| is provided for securing the ends of theelastic straps l9 and 2| together to cause the waist portion of the dickey to snugly fit the waist of the wearer W. l
It is well known that straps have been. employed in the art for securing the lower portions of the front and back panels together. ever, they do not function in such a manner as to cause the collar to fit properly. It has been found that the elastic straps closely embrace the waist preventing the riding up of the panels and at the same time urging the collar downwardly into embracing engagement with the shoulders effecting a graceful and comfortable fit thereof.
In Figure 5, the dickey 28 is provided with a collar 30 which is of a different form than thecollar l5 and is provided witha closure flap 32 adapted to be fastened by means of a separable fastener or buttons. i
The dickey 6 may be provided with suitable ornamentation on the front 8 which will be exposed through the ensemble coat to add to the aesthetic beauty of the garment and if desired, the dickey can be pressed to conform to the bosom of the wearer W.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred embodiment of the same. a
and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.-
What is claimed is:
. A dickey for womens wear comprising a front panel and aback panel, both panels extending down to the waist line and being spaced at the sides along substantially parallel edges, said panels being joined together at the shoulders and around the neck by means of a loosely fitting collar, elastic bands connecting said panels at the lower ends of their side edges, theupward displacement of the bottom edge of said front panel from said waist line, due to the natural bust configuration of the .wearer causing a stress in said elasticbands and a resulting downward pull on the side edges of said front panel, thereby holding the upper portion of said dickey, including said collar, in place.
