This invention relates to a vest construction for mens suits and is particularly directed to a means for permitting the expansion of the fabric parts which comprise a vest to afford comfort to its wearer.

An object of the invention is to provide a hidden and unobtrusive means for increasing the circumference of a vest which is buttoned or fastened at its central front portion, thus insuring a comfortable garment which may be adjusted to the variations in the girth of the wearer due either to natural increase of said girth or by way of the taking of nourishment of the like.

Another object of the invention is to provide a means for increasing the circumference of a vest which permits the front or uncovered part of a vest to remain in the exact position it occupied previous to the operation of said means for increasing its circumference.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a means for effecting the above results which is entirely hidden from view, is easily accessible when required, is cheaply installed in any type of vest and operates effectively when it is needed.

Other objects will be apparent from the following specification and drawing, in which:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the vest with the concealin flap turned back to show the fastening means for the attachment.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a modified form of the vest of my invention.

Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View similar to that of Fig. 2 showing the attachment in expanded position.

The embodiment of my invention consists of a vest 6 having a front part I and a rear part 8, said front part being separated along its central front portion and provided with buttons 9 for engagement with button-holes ID in the conventional manner. The rear part may be provided with a central vertical seam ll, arm-holes l2 being formed by the front and rear part and disposed near the upper portion of the vest. A seam I3 is provided for binding the adjacent edges of the front and rear part together between the neck engaging portion M of the vest and the arm-hole. The front part is provided with an inner lining l and the rear part has an inner lining It in the conventional manner.

The vertical adjacent edges of the front and 55 rear part are joined together by means of a separable fastening element I! which extends from the lower edge N3 of the vest to a point adjacent the lower portion of the arm-holes. As shown in Fig. 1, the front and rear part are joined at and beneath the arm-holes by a seam IS, the upper end of the fastener terminating at the lower end of said seam.

The means for interposing the hookless fastener l1 between the edges of the vest parts as shown in Fig. 2, comprises an inturned fold l8 and a return fold [9 formed in the rear part and joined together by means of a connecting portion 20. The inturned fold is disposed in close proximity to the vertical edge of the front part I and with the straight portion forms a flap 2| for concealing the hookless fastener H. An inner straight portion 22 formed of the same material as the rear portion underlies the hookless fastener and terminates in a hooked portion 23. A line of stitching 24 is run through the rear portion, the connecting portion 20, one complementary part 25 of the hookless fastener and the inner straight portion 22 to bind them together. The adjacent edge of the front part is provided with a hooked portion 26 which is interlocked with the edge 23 of the rear part and a line of stitching 21 is run therethrough and through the complementary part 28 of the fastener to bind said parts together.

To increase the circumference of the vest when the front separated parts are closed by means of the buttons and button-holes, the slider element 29 of the hookless fasteners on both sides of the vest are each in turn grasped and moved upwardly to the lower part of the seam I9. This permits the receding of the lower edges of the front and rear parts to a position indicated in Fig. 3.

A modification of my vest attachment is shown in Fig. 4, which shows a front part 30 and a rear part 3! forming an arm-hole 32 at its upper portion, the vertical adjacent edges of said parts being joined together by means of a hookless fastener 33. The fastener is interposed between said parts in a manner similar to that shown in my preferred form, except that at the lower edge of the front part a vent 34 is formed and the termination of said fastener is at a point adjacent the upper edge of said vent. The hookless fastener also extends from a point adjacent the vent into the lower edge of the arm-hole so that when the fastener is operated the front and rear part may be entirely separated from the armhole to the upper edge of the vent.

line of stitching binding together the rear part, an intermediate part of the straight portion and one complementary part of the fastener and a line of stitching binding together the hooked ends of the front and rear parts of the vest and the other complementary part of the fastener, the inturned fold forming a concealing flap for the fastener.

2. In a vest construction the combination of a front part and a rear part, an arm-hole formed by the front and rear part, and means for separably fastening the adjacent edges of the front and rear vest parts between the arm-hole and the lower edge of the vest, said means comprising a return interior fold positioned beneath the rear part and removed from the adjacent edge thereof, an extended connecting portion for said fold fastened at its free edge to the adjacent edge of the rear part, an inner straight portion independent of the separable fastening means joined to the return interior fold and the adjacent edge of the front part, and a hookless fastener disposed exteriorly of the inner straight portion, and fastened to the adjacent edges of the front and rear vest parts.
