ec. 23, 1941- M. G.IROSENFELD APPAREL GARMENT Filed Jan. 8, 1941 INVENTOR. 1 iWLToN G. RosENFELb ATTRNE Patented Dec. 23, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,266,910 1 APPAREL- GARMENT Milton G. Roscnfeld, University City, Mo.
Application January 8, 1941, Serial No. 373,532
3 Claims.
This invention relates generally to apparelgarments and, more particularly, to a certain new and useful improvement in outer garments especially adapted for women's wear.
My invention has for its primary object the provision in particularly a womans outer garment of simple, unique means for enabling the interchangeable use with the garment proper of selected collars of like or different contour and material.
My invention has for a further object the constructing of the garment in such manner that the collar-attaching structure is entirely concealed, does not detract from the normal appearance of the garment, is comfortable upon the wearer, and will secure the selected or particular collar uniformly, snugly, and smoothly in proper position, puckering, wrinkling, or the like of either the collar or the garment being totally obviated.
And with the above and other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts presently described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figures 1 and 2 are fragmentary front elevational views of a womans outer garment equipped with interchangeable collars in accordance with my invention and respectively illustrating the collars in fully installed and partially removed positions;
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view of the garment taken approximately along the line 3-3, Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view illustrating the means for detachably securing the collars interchangeably to the garment.
Referring now in more detail and by reference characters to the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my present invention, A designates a womans apparel-garment of any standard or approved form and type. In the present instance, garment A, as shown, is of the coat type and buttons up the front, so to speak, although it will be obvious that any other type of apparel-garment preferably for women's outer wear may be employed.
Garment A is formed at and around its neckline a with an upwardly opening placket or pocket I, the outer wall of which is provided by an extension b of the back panel 2 of the garment and the inner wall of which is provided by a collar-facing strip 3 of suitable material preferably pocket I and stitched as by means of an inturned seam 4 along the upper margin of the back-panel extension b, is an inwardly disposed placketfacing strip 5 formed preferably of the same material as the back panel 2, and similarly secured to and along the upper margin of the facing strip 3 as by means of an inturned seam 6, is a placket lining I preferably of rayon, silk, or other similar lining material.
Disposed within, and extending lengthwise along the base of, the placket I and secured to the placket-facing strip 5 as by means of a line of stitches 8, is a section of suitabletape 9 conventionally provided along its upper margin with a series of slide fastener elements ID, the outer and inner walls I) and 3 of the placket I and the slide-fastener tape 9 being secured together in a unitary structure as by means of a second line of stitches I'I disposed in downwardly spaced relation to the line of stitches 8 and extending through all of the several thicknesses of the placket walls, as best seen in Figure 3 and for purposes presently more fully appearing.
Provided for detachable securement to the garment A, is a plurality of interchangeable collars B, B, each preferably consisting of two companion-shaped layers or thicknesses of material I2, I2, marginally secured together by inturned seams I3, I3, the latter seam also including an outwardly projecting lengthwise extending section of tape It provided with a series of slide fastener elements I5 for co-operable engagement with the slide fastener elements II). In this connection, the slide fastener tapes 9 I4, are of the completely detachable type, the tape 9 being provided with a slide member I6 and a so-called end-block I! and the tape I I similarly being provided with an end-prong I8, all as best seen in Figure 4.
In use, a selected collar B is marginally inserted into the placket I with the slide fastener tape I4 presented downwardly and the endprong I8 inserted through the slide I6 into the end fixture II. The slide I6 is then zipped in the conventional manner, detachably securing with the garment A at its placket I, but otherwise the collars B, B, may vary in contour and material to suit the taste and costume ensembles of the particular user, it being, of course, understood that the several collars B, B, may
matching panel 2. Completing the placket or 55 be made in a single selected color and merely removed or replaced to permit washing or cleann any event,' the detachable collar structure of my invention provides a collar which is held snugly and smoothly in place; By reason otthe fact that the slide fastener tape l,-which is disposed within the placket I is secured to the placket-facing by means of a separate line of stitches 8 which is spaced upwardly from the placket-securing line of stitches-l I, the slide fastener and indeed the entire detachable collar structure will lie snugly and smoothly against the outer wall 2 of the placket l and will not curl over or gap. Finally, if the wearer should, under certain circumstances, desire an entirely collarless garment, the collar B may be removed and the placket I will automatically close by reason of the normal resiliency of the materialsand the fact that the width of the slide fastener tape is substantially narrower than the depth of the placket I, thus completely concealing the slide fastener tape 8 and the associated slide fastener elements 10, with the dual result that the wearer is protected from engagement by the slide fastener elements 10 and the latter are connected, less than the heighth of the'placket concealed, obviating any unsightly appearance.
It should be understood that changes and modifications in the form, construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the collar and garment may be madearid-substituted for those herein shown and described flaps by a distance greater than the distance betion above its line of attachment within the placket, and a cooperable slide fastener tape 'on of such free section being, when the tapes are,
flaps for detachably securing the collar to and upon the placket with said collar margin concealed within the placket.
2. A neck and collar structure for apparel garments comprising agarment body provided with aneckline portion having inner and outer flaps forming a placket, a separate collar having a neckline edge patterned to fit down within the placket opening and substantially conform to the neckline of the body of the garment, a slide fastener tape on the necklineedge of the collar, and a mating slide fastener tape secured within the placket with its upper edge spaced inwardly from, the placket edges by a distance greater than the distance between the neckline edge of the collar and the outer edge of its attached slide-fastener portion whereby when the slide fastener tapes are connected. the neckline edge of the collar is concealed within the placket so -that the inner and outer flaps of the placket provide a finish around the neckline when the collar is attached and also completely concealing the fastener tapewitliin the placket and presenting a finished appearance around the neckline on both the inside and the outside when the collar is removed.
3. An apparel-garment comprising, in combination, a body portion provided around its neckline with a two-flapped placket having opposed inwardly turned facing strips, a collar having a slide fastener tape along one margin thereof, and a mating slide fastenertape disposed entirely within the placket between the placket flaps secured between both facing strips by a first line of stitches and securedto only one facing strip by a second line of stitches spaced upwardly from the first line of stitches, the upper free margin of the mating tape being spaced inwardly from the free margins 'of the placket tween the outer margin of the collar and the edge of its associated tape for detachably securing the collar to the garment with said collar-margin concealed within the placket.
