5 Claims. 01. 132-33) The present invention is concerned with a combined hair curler and comb and one principal object of the invention is concerned with a simplified hair curler swingably carried at one end of the comb and adapted to be swung to an open position laterally thereof to conveniently curl hair at which time the comb constitutes a handle adapted to be bodily rotated about its long axis to bodily rotate the hair curler, the arrangement being such that in the closed relation of the curler the latter constitutes means closely and frictionally straddling the sides of the comb for reinforcing purposes. Other important objects and advantages will appear from the following detailed description viewed in the light of the accompanying drawing wherein:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combined hair curler and comb, shown in a closed relation in full lines, and in an open relation in dash lines.

Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 illustrates in perspective the manner in which the hair curler is utilized as a handle when the comb is employed to dress the hair.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the comb and curler in an opened relation and the complementary hair clamping complements .of the curler also is in an opened relation preparatory to grasping a tress of hair.

Fig. 5 is an elevational view of Fig. 4 however illustrating a curl held in a clamped relation by the swingable complements of the curl and a normally closed hair pin sustained at one end of the curler but with the shanks thereof diverged and awaiting to receive the curl from the curler and Fig. 6 is a view illustrating the manner in which a curl is held by the hair pin after the curl is transferred from the curler onto the pin.

In the single embodiment disclosed,.the combined hair curler and comb is generally denoted A and includes a comb C and a hair curler H. The comb is of a conventional type and may be of a suitable thermo plastic material although not necessarily limited in this respect. The comb includes an elongated rib or body 10 having the usual depending teeth ll.

Rotatably traversing one corner of the body is a fulcrum pin l2 carrying the hair curler having the complementary hair clamping components l3 and I4. More particularly however complement I3 is in the form of a cylindrical tube provided with a longitudinally disposed slot l and having depending ears l6 rotatably mounted on the fulcrum pin I2.

Complement I4 is a U shaped cover and embodies depending ears I1 suitably mounted on fulcrum pin I2 which-is upset to provide protuberances I8 to prevent separation of the complements of the curler from the fulcrum pin. Thus by the present arrangement, it is appreciated that the complements l3 and [4 may be pivoted relative to the comb 0 swing relative to each other. In the full line showing of Fig; 1, the complements of the curler are closed and the'latter is also in a closed relation in respect to the comb.

In such relation, edges 20 of the curved sides1l9 of complement l3 frictionally but yieldingly and closely straddle the body or rib l0 which is received in the full length of the elongated slot [5. If therefore complement I3 is closed in respect to the body of the comb, the frictional but resilient relation of the edges 20 against the sides of the body prevent this complement from being accidentally swung away from the body to assume an open position and in its closed relation as is well appreciated it also reinforces the body of the comb. With complement l3 removably embracing the sides of the comb, complement l4 may be conveniently swung to its closed, and superimposed position over its companion complement l3 as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Of course the curler may be swung to assume a position which is approximately one hundred and eighty degrees in respect to the body of the comb in which case the free transverse edge 2| of the cover complement l4 cooperates with the adjacent end 22 of the comb in such a way that the latter constitutes a stop to limit pivotal separation of the curler, for example, see Fig. 5 wherein the curler is approximately in alinement with or laterally overhangs the body of the comb and in such relation, the curler may be utilized as a handle while stroking the hair with the teeth of the comb as illustrated in Fig. 3.

Pursuant to stroking of a tress of hair by the comb, this tress may be readily curled. In this connection complements I3 and M are swingably separated as shown in Fig. 4. Thereafter these complements are closed to clamp the intervening curl and to assume a position substantially in longitudinal alinement with the body of the comb. Subsequently the comb is employed as a handle and is bodily rotated about its long axis. Consequently the tress of hair initially grasped between the complements of the curler is wound about the complements to form the curl 23.

Having wound the curl, a normally closed hair pin 24 of the type well known in the art may be mounted on the curler in such a way that one shank 25 is within complement 13 and the other shank 26 thereof is held in a biased relation by the cover complement l4. Thus the hair pin is in a position to receive the fonned curl which may be threaded on shank 25 by first sliding the curl towards the hair pin and subsequently withdrawing the curler away from the hair pin. Hence the curler is detached from the hair pin and the latter closes automatically to clamp the curl as illustrated in Fig. 6. Thus by the present invention, it is apparent that the combined comb and curler may be employed to readily dress a head of hair and in the closed or folded relation of the curler and comb the arrangement is such that it occupies relatively small space and may be conveniently kept even in a ladys pocketbook.

In the broader aspects of the invention, I do not desire to be understood as limiting its embodiment to details herein shown illustratively as a wide variety ofmodifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:

1. In combination, an elongated body, fulcrum means disposed transversely of said body, and hair curling means comprising a pair of components pivotally sustained by said fulcrum means, one of said components having spaced sides defining an elongated slot adapted to receive a portion of said body, the other component of said pair adapted to be swung in superimposed relation in respect to said component receiving a part of said body.

In combination, an elongated body, fulcrum means disposed transversely of said body, and hair curling means comprising a pair of components pivotally sustained by said fulcrum means, one of said components having curved and spaced sides including spaced edges defining an elongated slot adapted to receive a portion of said body and adapted to frictionally embrace the sides of the latter, the other component being curved and adapted to be swun in superimposed relation in respect to and in contact with said component receiving a part of said body.

In combination, an elongated body, fulcrum means disposed transversely of said body, and hair curling means comprising a pair of components pivotally sustained by said fulcrum means, one of said components having spaced sides adapted to frictionally straddle and embrace a part of said body and be disposed longitudinally of the latter, the other of said component of said pair constituting a cover adapted to be swung on said component frictionally straddling said body.

4. In combination, an elongated body, fulcrum means disposed transversely of said body, and bodily swingable hair curling means comprising a pair of components pivotally sustained by said fulcrum means, one of said components having spaced curved sides to frictionably and closely embrace an upper part of said body, the other component of said pair constituting a curved cover adapted to be disposed in superimposed and contactual relation in respect to said complement embracing said body.

5. In combination, a body having transversely disposed fulcrum means, and hair curling means comprising a U-shaped member pivotally sustained by said fulcrum means and comprising spaced sides for removably and frictionally embracing the sides of said body and including an elongated slot adapted to receive an upper part of said body, and a U-shaped cover member pivotally sustained by said fulcrum means for removably straddling said sides.
