W. AGKERMAN. Boot-Leg Straps.
No.218,911. Patented Aug. 26, I879.
\ 'TNESSES I INVENTOR ATTORN EYsv NPEI'ERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER, WASHINGION D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM AGKEBMAN,
-OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
IM PROVEMENT IN BOOT-LEG STRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,911, dated August 26, 1879; application filed June 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A KERMAN, of Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot-Leg Straps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a boot-leg, showing my straps applied; and Fig. 2 is a view of the strap.
My invention relates to boot-leg straps; and consists in the improvements in the construction of the same hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the boot-leg, constructed in any of the known and usual ways, with a seam, a, along each side, as shown. B B represent the straps, which are cut with tapering ends, as shown in the figure representing the pattern. Each strap is folded from the center, with both ends on the same side, forming, as it were, anopen loop, and the edges 12 b of the ends of the strap are brought together and sewed into the seam a when the said seam is made.
The straps B may be thus united to the boot-leg either on the inside or outside at the top, or they may be fastened on the outside, lower down, at or near the middle, in very long boot-legs. In all cases, however, they are fastened in the side seams, a, at the same time when the said seams are made; and the particular way of folding the straps makes an open loop or socket on the outside, for the easy insertion of the fingers.
Ordinarily boot-straps are made of pieces of leather or webbing doubled, and sewed separately at two edges to the boot-legs. With my invention they are fastened to the strongest part of the leg, and at the same time when the side seams are made, thus saving time and labor in attaching them, while at the same time making them stronger and more durable.
The ordinary flatly-folded boot-straps also are often inconvenient to get the fingers into, while by my invention the strap is always in position for the insertion of the fingers. It also saves the material with which they are fastened, and takes less leather or web to make them. They are easily repaired in case of breakage, by simply turning down the bootleg below the strap, when they may be sewed on the same as when new.
I claim- A boot-leg provided with the strap attached by its adjacent beveled edges in the side seam of the boot-leg, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM AGKERMAN.
Witnesses STEWART GURLE, JAMEs DIAMOND.
