Description

A. W. SOUTHARD & V. R. SEARS.
Invalid-Bed.
No. 212,757. Patented Feb. 25,1879.
WITNESSES: TORI? ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT Damon.
ALFRED WV. SOUTHARD AND VOLNEY R. SEARS, OF FALLS CITY, NEBR.
IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID-BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,757. dated February 25, 1879; application filed September 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALFRED WILLIAM SOUTHARD and VoLNnY RUnUs Snnns, of Falls City, in the county of Richardson and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Invalid-Beds, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section taken through the line as x, Fig.2. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail View in elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The invention will first be described in 0011- nection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the frame, which is formed of four posts, connected at their upper and lower ends by bars, and strengthened at the upper side corners by braces.
B are bars that support a flag-staff, O, and D the frame of bedstead, having feet E and cross-slats F H, to which are attached springs Gr and short bars I. J are tie-rods, and K are connectingstraps, while L represents the mattress. To the end bars of the bedsteadframe 1) are attached four cords, M, that are passed through holes in the ends of short blocks N, over the pulleys O, and then through holes in the other ends of said blocks, being knotted to prevent them from drawing out. The cords M and blocks N enable the bed to be readily adjusted at any desired height, when the friction of the blocks upon the cords will hold it securely in place.
To the top side bars of the frame A, near their foot ends, are detachably attached the ends of a cross-bar, T, to the end parts of which are attached by tenons and keys, or other conveniently-detachable means, the upper ends of two bars, U. To the lower ends of the bars U are hinged the upper ends of two short bars, V, to the lower ends of which are attached the ends of a cross-bar, W. The bar W is padded, and is designed to support the leg of an invalid while having a surgical operation performed upon it or having it dressed.
WVhen not in use the bar W may be turned
