To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELI RUNDELL, of Santa Barbara. State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Convertible Chairs and Bedsteads, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

My invention relates to improvements in convertible chairs and couches, and the objects are to provide an article of furniture of the kind named which can be readily and at will used as a seat, or, when desired, without trouble converted into a couch to lie down upon.

My improvements therefore consist in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side view of my invention arranged as a couch. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing it arranged as a chair. Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section of the back or seat, showing the strengthening wires; and Fig. 4. is a View showing the supports in reverse position from that shown in Fig. 1.

The letter A represents a frame the long side pieces of which are properly secured together by cross-pieces in any well-known ways. This frame has pivotally attached to the rear part the reversible supports B, and is also provided with notches a, substantially as shown. The reversible supports B serve as supports to the head crosspiece when the device is used as a couch, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings; or they may serve as supporting-legs when the frames are brought together. They are notched in the ends, as seen in the drawings, for the purpose of securely holding the end of the frame when it is set upon them.

The letter 0 represents another frame, corresponding in length with the frame A, and having its side bars secured at the rear end together by any suitable means, but the front ends left free, and have pivotally secured to them the legs D, substantially as shown. The framesAand G are pivoted together at a 1 suitable point, b, in such relation that the front portion of the former shall serve as the seat, and the latter shall serve as the legs and 5 5 back when the article is used as a chair. To the rear portion of the frame 0, on the upper faces thereof, are secured buttons 0, or their equivalents, for the purpose of serving as means for supporting the loop or frame E, which is pivotally secured to the side bars of the frame 0, substantially as shown. The upper or rear ends of this frame E are secured together by a cross-bar, which serves to support and brace the frame 0 by engagement with the notches a when the chair is adjusted in the position shown in Fig. 2. The loop or brace also serves the purpose of a pillowstay when fixed in the position seen in Fig. 1, being sustained in the position seen by the buttons on the side rails of the frame 0.

The letter F represents the material forming the back and seat, or, as may be, the webbing for the mattress to rest on. This material is fastened to the front and rear cross-pieces of the frame, respectively. To strengthen and protect the material forming the back and seat, I secure in the edges wire cords or ropes G, of sufficient strength and pliability to meet the strain upon the device, and at the same time flexible enough to adapt itself to the uses intended. The frame is adapted to fold straight, so that when together in a folded condition it occupies only the space of the main frames A and C, and when in such condition or position the bed materials may be stowed in the space in the inside of the frame, and the whole be put in a bag made to receive them, and thus be easily transported from place to place.

WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a convertible chair and couch, the combination of the frame A, reversible supports B, frame 0, provided with buttons 0, loop or 5 frame E, and seat F, substantially as described.
