Description
W. S. ATWOOD. Umbrella Tip-Cup.
N 209,598. I Pgtepted N9M-"5, 137s.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER S. ATWOOD, OF WATERBURY, GONN., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND AMERICAN RING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE, ONE-HALF TO EACH.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA TIP-CUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209.598, dated November 5, 1878; application filed August 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, WALTER S. Arwoon, of Waterbury, in the State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Tip-Cups for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification: i
Tip-cups have been made of thin sheet metal, in a nearly cylindrical form, and provided with an in ward flange, forming a guide that slides upon the tube that is attached to the handle, and a bead has been made at the edge of the tip-cup.
The object of my invention is to strengthen and stiffen the tip-cup, to prevent the fingers slipping as the tip-cup is moved, and to lessen the risk of the tips of the umbrella-ribs escaping from the tip-cup.
In the drawings, Figure l is a section of the tip-cup. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the tip'cup.
The tube a is of usual character, secured upon the handle of the umbrella or parasol, and upon this the tip-cup slides.
The tip-cup c is made with an inward flange, 2, and cylindrical socket, that guides the tipcup as it is moved endwise upon the tube a.
The tip-cup is nearly cylindrical in its external shape, and is stiffened by corrugations 3 3, made inthe sheet metal, so that it will not be as liable to bend by concussion or byhandling as the tip-cups heretofore made.
I prefer that these corrugations run around the cylindrical cup, in order that they may form aroughness to prevent the fingers slipping upon the outside of the cup when moving the same, and also prevent the cup slipping accidentally off the tips or ends of the umbrellaribs.
Oorrugations have been made in umbrellarunners, and in the tubular parts of the tipcup slide surrounding the stick, and a single rib has been introduced around the tip-cup.
H In my improved tip-cup the entire cylindrical portion is made with peripheral corrugations, so as to stifl'en the tip-cup and adapt the same to holding the tips of the umbrellaribs, whether the tip-cup is pressed over them to a greater or less extent.
I claim as my invention- The tip -cup having its entire cylindrical portion corrugated, for the purposes and as set forth.
Signed by me this 23d day of August, A.
WALTER S. ATWOOD. Witnesses:
OURTIs THOMPSON, JAMES H. SGRIBNER.
