IMPROVEMENT IN TlPS FOR SATCHEL-HANDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,727, dated April 4, 1876 application filed June 16, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE O. MONROE, 0t Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Tips for Satchel-Handles, of which the following is a specification:

Tips for satchel-handles have been made of thin sheet metal in the form of two halt cylinders, connected by a metal tongue that is bent up to form the eye for receiving the loop or ring by which the tip is connected to the satchel, and into this tip the end of the flexible handle is inserted and secured by rivets passing through the parts. Tips of this kind are liable to wear in the eye, and are not as strong in this portion as they arcin the cylindrical portion that grasps the handle, and is riveted to the same, and it the thickness of the sheet metal is increased they become heavy and expensive.

My invention is for strengthening the eye or loop of the satchel-handle tip, and for this purpose I make use of an inner shield of metal within the loop of the tip, and extending up to this socket for the handle sufficiently to strengthen the tip, and relieves the loop thereof of the wear heretofore coming upon the thin sheet metal of the tip.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section 0fthe-tip and a portion of the satchelhandle. Fig. 2 is a separate view of the shield, and Fig. 3 represents the shape of the piece of sheet metal that is "cut out to form the shield.

The tip for the end of the satchel-handle .a is made of one piece of sheet metal with the semicircular portions 1) setting together to form a socket for receiving the end of such handle, and into which the handle is secured by the rivets i. The portion 0 connecting the socket-pieces b is bent up to form a loop, and within this is the shields within the eye or loop 0, and by preference made with wings 2 2 that pass into the socket portions 1), so as I do not claim the socket-tip made of a single thickness of sheet metal; but as this is liable to wear in the eye the shield s is applied thereto to relieve the wear without altering the other parts of the socket or eye, and said shield applied in said eye receives the wear, relieves the eye, and is but a trifle additional expense.

I claim as my invention The shield s, constructed as described, and combined with the sheet-metal socket or tip, for the satchel handle, in the manner and for the purposes set forth. Signed by me this 14th day of June, A. D. 1875.
