Description
H. WINTER UMBRELLA-TIP cur. No. 171,076. Patented bec.14,1875.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
HENRY WINTER,-OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA TIP-CUPS.
pecificatibn forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,076, dated December 14, 1875; application filed November 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, HENRY WINTER, 01 Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Spring Tip-Cups for Umbrellas and Parasols, of which the following is a specification:
Spring tip-cups of various kinds have here tofore been employed, but the spring has usually been between two of the metal parts, and-"hence the expense of the tip cup was materially increased by the addition of the spring and the parts necessary to it. In cases where the spring has been attached at one end to the tip-cup, and at the other end to the handle, said spring has been visible.
My intention is for applying the spring to a. tip with but little change in the tip-cup,'and for inclosing the spring. This I accomplish by making a shoulder upon the stick or handle of the umbrella or parasol, against which shoulder the spring bears at one end, and at the other end against an inward flange upon the tip-cup tube.
By this construction the spring is inclosed, and the tip-cup tube slides over the larger portion of the stick toward the handle portion.
In the drawing the improvement is represented by a vertical section.
The tip-cup a is attached upon the tube 11, and there is an inward flange, 0, at one end of this tube, for the spring 01 to bear against. The handle or stick 0 of the umbrella or parasol is made with an offset at i, forming a shoulder for the other end of the spring d. A pin at o limits the movement of the tipcup away from the shoulder The tip-cup tube 1) slides freely over the larger portion of the handle, and the spring is inclosed, but acts asefi'ectually to press the tip'cup toward the tips as it would if the spring acted against metallic tubes or flanges specially provided.
I claim as my invention- In combination with the tip-cup a, tube b,
inward flange c, and spring d, the shoulder 'i when formed upon the stick e of the umbrella, as and for thepurpose set forth.
Signed by me this 12th day of November, A. D. 1875.
HENRY WINTER.
