UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
THOS. MOGONAUGHY, OF BARNESVILLE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 19,706, dated March 2-,1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MOOONAUGHY, of Barnesville, in the county of Dallas and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, which represents a perspective View of the plow.
My invention has reference to the construction of subsoil-plows; and it consists in running the piece to which the point is attached rearward a distance about equal to the height of the piece, substantially as and for the purposes hereinafter to be set forth.
In the drawing, B is the beam, and H H are the handles, of the plow. The metal portion P of the plowisfornied as shown in the drawing, and is attached to the beam by bolts a a, passing through its upper portion.
The portion 1? of the plow extends rearward at bottom a distance about equal to the height of the beam above its base. This base has a flange,f, on each side, gradually widening as its distance from the point increases. The
point 0 is attached by bolts 1) I), an opening, 0,
being made in P for this purpose. The front and rear edges of the part P are thicker than the middle portion, which may not exceed a quarter of an inch in thickness.
The object of this construction is to afiord a surface behind the point against which the loose earth will press, and thus insurea steadiness of-running. The broad flangesf serve to keep the plow from rising in rear.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V Extending the piece P, to which the point is secured, rearward a distance nearly equal to its height and givingitincreasinglowerflanges at bottom, said piece being formed with thick bounding edges and a thin plate filling theintermediate space, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
THOS. MOGONAUGHY.
Vitnesses:
GEO. PATTEN, JOHN S. HOLLINGSHEAD.
