IMPROVEMENT IN CHECK- REIN SUPPORTS FOR HARNESS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,604, dated October 30, 1877; application filed September 13, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ASAHEL B. TRACY, of- Mayville, Chautauqua county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Check-Rein Supports for Harness and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which-'- Figure 1 represents a front view of my improvement detached from a bridle. Fig. 2 represents the rear or back side of the same, and Fig. 3 is an edge view. Fig. 4is a front view of the support as attached to a bridle. The leading object of my invention is to provide a detachable metal rein-support for bridles, which, being provided with a pulley or roller, will, when in use, permit free movement of the check-rein, so that it shall adjust itself to the action of the horses head and neck when in motion, as herein described.

I construct my device of plated sheet metal. The back plate A is furnished with a button, B, by which the rein-support may be attached to the headstall of a bridle, at that place where the rosette or tassel is usually fastened, and it is also provided with the stud 0, cut. out of the same piece of metal, and bentlaterally and vertically, as represented, to serve as a support for the brow-band, and as a stop to, limit the vibrating motions of the pendent reinsupport.

The front plate A, fastened to back plate A,

- is bent to the shape represented in Figs. 1 and 3, and the roller or pulley D is journaled between the lower ends of the two plates A A. The open space G is provided for the free action of the check-rein, which passes through it, and works upon roller D. The upper part of plate A is bent laterally and vertically, as

shown at F, to form the narrow space at H, for the brow-band of the bridle, and a metal rosette, E, is attached, as shown.

When the button B is buttoned into a hole made for the purpose in the headstall, the stud O enters between the cheek-strap L and the throat-strap M, where they unite and constitute the crown-piece K of the bridle. The loop 0, formed in the end of the brow-band N, rests upon the stud O, and within the open lsFpace H behind the rosette E, as represented in By the use of my improvement, proper freedom is allowed for the natural motions of the horse in traveling; besides, it materially reduces the cost of the construction of the bridle, and serves as a very attractive ornament for the harness.

This improved rein-support may be manufactured and furnished to the trade and to the public as an article of manufacture that can be readily attached to a bridle by simply cutting a button-hole at the point designated for the purpose. It will be understood that one of these supports is to be attached to each side of the bridle.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The plate A, provided with button B, in combination with curved plate A and pulley D, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination of the plates A and A of the check-rein support with the stud C and support F, as and for the purpose described.
