Description

(NoModeL) F. E. JENKINS.
BACK BAND BUCKLE FOR PLOW HARNESS.
No. 345,306. I PatentedJuIy-13, 1886.
. NITED STATES BACK-BAND BUCKLE FOR PLOW-HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,306, dated July l3,1886.
Application filed February .23, 1886. Serial No. 192,810. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. JENKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankville,in the county of Monroe and'State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Buckles for Plow- Harness; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to construct a buckle which may beadjustable on the back-band, so as to hold the trace at any elevation or adjustment to suit the height of horse or the desired line of draft; also to carry the plow-line.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of the whole buckle. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line a; w of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a rear or inside view of the pendent frame, the same being in elevation.
In the drawings, A represents the back-band of a plow-harness, which is employed without breeching, in the usual manner.
13 is a frame, having two parallel slots, 1) I), through which band A passes, and G a gripbar, which retains the buckle at any point of adjustment on the band with its teeth 0. In-
tegral with this bar, which is journaled in the studs 1) b on the sides of and at right angles to the frame B, is a pendent frame, D, which carries the spring E. The latter is riveted thereto and bent down at the pointe opposite to the upward or outward bend f on arm F, which is intended to support the trace G.
Thus it will be seen that the trace may be very easily inserted or removed by first pressing the spring E inwardly, but cannot possibly work out. I preferably bend the spring up at right angles to the tooth-bar, and in this bend 0, Iform a hole, e in which is secured a ring, H, for the plow-line Igenerally asmall-sized rope.
Instead of bending up the rear end of the spring, I may use an independent stud or one integral with the tooth-bar.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Let ters Patent, is-
1. In a plow-band buckle, the frame 13, slotted at b b and having side studs, b b, in combination with a toothed bar, 0, journaled in said studs, the pendent frame 1), the spring E, and the curved arm F, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a plow-band buckle, the combination of the spring E and arm F, the former turned inwardly at e and the latter outwardly at f,
whereby the trace may be inserted or removed by pressing the spring inwardly, as set forth. 3. A back-band buckle for plow-harness, consisting of the frame B, having the two parallel slots 1) b, the adjustable toothed gripbar 0, journaled in studs 1) b on frame B, and the pendent frame D, integral with said bar and carrying the trace-support, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS E. JENKINS.
