IMPROVEMENT lN HARNESS-TRIMMINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,636, dated January 25, 1876; application filed December 1, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMIT G. LATIA, of Friendship, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Runners for Harness, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to an improved construction of the metallic loop or hearing which supports the check-rein near the throat of the horse, and which is commonly designated as check-runner.

The nature of my invention will be fully understood from the following description.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved check-runner; Fig. 2, a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a slightly-modified form of my improved check-runner.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in each of the figures.

A represents the body of the checkrunner, formed so as to curve outwardly in a semicircular or other suitable form, and made open at the back, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. It is provided at its upper end with a loop, a, having a stub-tongue, a, arranged as shown in Fig. 1, or as shown in Fig. 3, whereby it is connected to the billet B of they throat-latch; but, if desired, the loop a may be cast in the form of an ordinary harness-buckle, and provided with a movable tongue. 0 is a loop, formed at the lower end of the body A of the runner, for passing through the throat-latch billet, as clearly shown. The fixed tongue a may, however, be attached to the lower loop 0, instead of the upper one a, if preferred.

It will be seen from the foregoing that the strap B closes the open back of the metallic runner, thus virtually forming the inner side thereof, and retaining the check-rein in place after it is engaged with the runner.

My improved check-runner is shorter than the ordinary devices of this class, and, consequently, raises the check-rein higher, at the same time leaving a longer billet of the throatlatch, and accordingly more room to adjust the latter. Furthermore, as it has a loop at each end it is kept in close contact with the head of the horse, and holds both check-reins in the same position at all times.

As my improved check-runner is open at the back the check-rein can be inserted at the same time that the runner is attached to the bridle, thus avoiding the tedious process of unbuckling the check-rein and passing it through the runner, and then unbuckling the same, which is of great importance in the harness of farm-horses, which do not require to be checked up high while working, but can be readily checked up by my improved checkrunner for driving on the road.

My improved check-runner, being composed of a single piece, is readily cast complete without cores or drawing the pattern in pieces, and is lighter and less expensive than those now in common use.

I claim as my invention- 1. An open-back check-runner provided with two loops, at c, at its upper and lower ends, adapted to receive the billet of the throatlatch, for facilitating the attachment and removal of the runner, and for keeping the same in contact with the head of the horse, substantially as hereinbefore setforth.

2. A check-runner composed of the rigid curved body A, made open at the hack, and provided with a buckle, a, a, and loop 0, for its connection with the throat-latch billet, substantially as and for the purpose h ereinbefore set forth.
