This invention relates to improvements in cosmetlc compacts and more particularly to a compact which has provision for a housing and for spring means for the retention and positioning of a mascara brush.

The invention specifically is an improvement over the inventions embodied respectively in the copending U. S. applications Nos. 586,013, filed January 11th,'1932 and 598,742 filed March 14th, 1932, both in the names of the same applicants herein.

A broad object of the present invention is provision of a compact provided with a new and novel housing and suporting means for a mascara brush.

Another object of the invention is provision of contemporaneous means of maintaining a protruding and yieldable position of the brush handle independent of the aforementioned housing for the brush head.

A further object of the invention is provision of a compact case cooperating with the said mascara brush such that the upper portion of the compact case is adapted to compress the protruding brush handle when the said upper portion latches with the lower portion of the compact case.

These objects and other incidental features of the invention will be brought out in the following disclosure and in the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and wherein like reference characters represent corresponding parts throughout the several views.

Moreover, the general structure of the compact cooperating with the subject matter of the pres ent invention, it is understood, will be set forth merely as a reiteration of the specifications em= bodied in the copending applicationsabove enumerated.

Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a preferred form of a compact in open and operative position, wherein the sublest matter of the invention a housing, a cooperating and yielding means therewith are shown. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lower portion of the compact shown in Fig. 1.

The compact with which the subject matter of the invention herein cooperates, comprises an upper portion 1, pivotally connected at 16 to the I lower portion 2,. the side walls of the said portions being preferably perpendicular to the upper and lower faces of the said two portions. 1 and 2 comprise a compact case proper, the side walls of the same offering sufficient height for the reception and enclosure of the elements hereinafter to be described. 17 represents the ordinary spring catch which is the usual mechanism employed in the opening and closing of compact cases of the type shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing, it being deemed unnecessary to show the cooperating notch with spring 17 on the front wallof the upper portion 1 of the compact case. A fiat mirror 3 is afiixed in any knovm fashion to the inner face of upper portion 1 of the compact case and is used for the usual purposes.

The compact case may be of any shape, but in the present embodiment of the invention is rectangular. The external portions of the compact may be enameled, engraved or otherwise decorated for the usual aesthetic reasons.

4 represents an intermediate base plate engaging the side walls of lower portion 2 at the peripheral edges thereof, as shown in Fig. 3. 5 is a casing for any cosmetic cake material, such as mascara, which said material requires a moistened brush for purposes of application. Casing 5 is adapted to rest on the upper face of lower portion 2 by penetrating intermediate base plate 4 through an opening conforming to the peripheral shape of casing 5. Casing 5 preferably comprises a continuous side wall, the shape of the said casing being of any desirable form, but preferably rectangular. 6 represents a cake of mascara which is held by casing 5 and which is removable when worn down for replenishing purposes.

"l is a casing or holder for a moistening element, such as sponge 9, and comprises preferably a rectangular body with an upper facing having an opening 8 and continuous side walls, as shown in Fig. 1. The opening 8 is preferably in the form of a diagonal slot and permits exposure of the upper face of sponge 9. The said holder 7 is supported at an opening in intermediate base plate 4 conforming to the desired peripheral shape of holder 7. The said holder or casing '7 is held in position by frictional engagement with the turned-down portions of the periphery of intermediate base plate 4 at the above said opening. The side walls of easing '7 are adapted to overlap a cup portion which said cup portion serves as a bottom on which rests sponge 9.

Intermediate base plate 4 is provided with a narrow slot 15 at a distance from the receptacle for casing 7, the said .slot 15 engaging levers 12 and. 18 by means of an intermediate bearing portion 15. Lever 13 is adapted to rest on the surface of the upper face of lower portion 2 within the space allotted for the bottom portion of easing 7, as best shown by reference to Fig. 3.

Lever 12 projects from intermediate base plate 4 at bearing 14. Thus, by hearing pressure on the upper face of lever 12, lever 13 is caused to ascend and thus raise therewith the whole of easing 7, it being remembered that the amount of pressure to be borne on lever 12, depends upon the frictional engagement between the side walls of casing 7 and the similar peripheral shape of the cut out receptacle of intermediate base plate 4. Levers 12 and 13 may be made of one piece of metal oflset intermediate the ends of levers thus to afford the intermediate or fulcruming portion 14. Thus it is seen that levers 12 and 13 comprise an ejector for easing 7 whenever it is desired to saturate sponge 9 contained therein. Casing 5 and holder 7 are arranged preferably in longitudinal alignment and adjacent to the rear and side walls of lower portion 2 for space conservation as preferably represented in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing.

10 represents the handle of an application brush for the cosmetic material, such as mascara and comprises a head 11 and bristles 21. The housing for head 11 and support for handle 10 are now to be described, the said housing and support comprising the substance of the invention herein.

22 represents a longitudinal and flat leaf spring being provided with lateral guide walls 23 at the outer termination thereof, the said leaf spring 22 being disposed at an acute angle with respect to the intermediate base plate 4 and preferably being parallel with the longer axis of the compact case. The said leaf spring 22 penetrates intermediate base plate 4 at slit 24 therein and continues on the underside of the said intermediate base plate 4 through slit 24 and by means of offset portion 25 in the formation of anchoring arm 26. Transversely opposed to leaf spring 22 is a housing 20 which comprises a receiving body with an open front face, which said receiving body is anchored to intermediate base plate 4 by any attaching means such as fingers 2'7 and 28. Housing or receiving body 20 is preferably rectangular in cross-section along the longer axis thereof and is adapted to act as both a partial enclosure for the head 11 of the brush and bristles 21 thereof and as an abutment for the said head 11 as best represented in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing.

To insert brush 11 into the compact case it is merely necessary to repose the handle of the said brush between the lateral guide flanges 23 of the leaf spring 22 and then push the said brush forward until the head 11 thereof reaches its maximum position in housing 20. Following such operation the handle 10 of the mascara brush protrudes above the lower portion of the compact case as shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing. Upon closing the upper portionof the compact case, handle 10, by virtue of the yieldability of leaf spring 22 on which the said handle rests is compressed into parallelism with the face of intermediate base plate 4, the guide flanges 23 maintaining the position of the handle in parallelism with the longer axis of the compact case. Upon opening the upper portion of the compact case, the activity of leaf spring 22 forces handle 10 of the mascara brush into an angular position with respect to the intermediate base plate 4, thereby afiording convenience to the operator for the withdrawal of the same.

The combination of said leaf spring 22 and housing 20 has the dominating advantage of affording a non-breakable and enduring holder and ejector for a brush.

We wish it understood that minor changes and variations in, the structure, location, size and shape of the various parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and without departing from the scope of 1 the appended claims.

We claim:

1. In combination with a compact case having an intermediate base plate as described, a holder for a brush comprising a housing to en- 1 close the head of said brush and a yieldable track to maintain the handle in an upwardly angular position for Withdrawal purposes when the compact case is in open position.

2. In combination with a compact case hav- 1 ing an intermediate base plate as described, a holder for a brush comprising a housing afilxed to the intermediate base plate to enclose the head of said brush and a yieldable track affixed to the said intermediate base plate to maintain the 1 handle in an upwardly angular position for withdrawal purposes when the compact case is in open position.

3. In combination with a compact case having an intermediate base plate as described, a 1 holder for a brush comprising a receptacle to enclose the head of said brush and a yieldable track transversely situated thereto to maintain the handle in an upwardly angular position for withdrawal purposes when the compact case is 1 in open position.

4. In combination with a compact case having an intermediate base plate as described, a

- holder for a. brush comprising a housing affixed to the intermediate base plate to enclose the head of said brush and a spring guide transversely situated thereto to maintain the handle in an upwardly angular position for withdrawal purposes when-the compact case is in open position.
