Description
March 20, 1934. 1.. x. HERMAN CHAIR DEVICE Filed Feb.
ALI/1'5 Z 777? INVENTOR.
A TORNE Y.
Patented Mar. 20, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to chairs. The principal object is to provide a chair with a tiltable back and a foot rest co-acting with the tiltable back.
I A further object is to provide a foot rest that,
when extended, has moved outwardly and upwardly.
A further object is to provide means for holding this tiltable back and foot rest in a fixed position.
A further object is to provide means for releasing the tiltable back from a fixed position to an adjustable or closed position.
A still further object is to provide a recess for the foot rest when in a closed position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it
being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:--
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair with parts broken away,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the chair showing the tiltable back tilted back and the foot rest extended.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that there is provided a tiltable back member A. This tiltable back member A is hinged to a back frame member 10 by means of hinges A1.
I am aware that chairs have been made with tiltable backs. My invention, however, provides a chair with a tiltable back and coacting with this 40 tiltable back member A an outwardly and upwardly extending foot rest B.
In referring to the drawing it is pointed out that while but one side of the chair is shown in detail as to construction and movable parts, both sides of the chair are of similar construction.
The tiltable back member A is pivoted at a point A2 to an actuating bar 1, the front end of which is pivoted to an upper end of an arm member 4. This pivoted arm member 4 is pivoted at a point 40 to a chair frame member C. The relatively long lower end of the pivoted arm member 4 is pivoted to a lower actuating bar 2 at a point 11. The extreme inner end of the lower actuating bar 2 is pivoted to a link 3 at a point 12. The upper end of this link 3 is secured to the chair frame member C at a point 30. The outer end B1 of the lower actuating bar 2 is secured firmly to the foot rest B.
It will be seen by referring to Figure 1 that the lower actuating bar 2 is provided with a guide and securing member 9. It will also be seen that the upper end of a leg 13 is bifurcated in order to allow freedom for the movement of the actuating bar 1.
In order that the tiltable back member A may be held in a desirable tilted angle there is provided a pivoted latch member 5 which functions with a latch pin 6 which is secured to the chair frame member C. For releasing the pivoted latch member 5 there is provided a latch manipulating :5 cord 7.
I claim:
In a chair, a chair frame having a seat mounted therein and a back hinged to the frame, said back normally extending upwardly and rear- 30 wardly, a foot rest suspended normally beneath the seat and means for moving the foot rest outwardly as the back is moved rearwardly, said means including a pair of oppositely disposed lower actuating bars the outer ends of which 5 are attached to the foot rest, a pair of oppositely disposed links having their upper ends pivoted to a portion of the frame, a pair of oppositely disposed pivoted arm members pivoted near the upper ends to a portion of the frame, said oppositely disposed links and oppositely disposed pivoted arm members extending downwardly and rearwardly from their pivotal connections when the foot rest is in its normal retracted position and having their lower ends pivoted to said lower 96 actuating bars, a pair of oppositely disposed actuating bars pivoted at one end to said back member and at their other end to the upper ends of said pivoted arm members, means for holding said back member in a desirable tilted angle in- 100 eluding a pair of oppositely disposed latch members pivoted to the upper ends of said pivoted arm members and a pair of oppositely disposed latch pins secured to the frame, means for releasing said pivoted latch members.
LEWIS X. HERMAN.
