R. LIEBLING TOILET SEAT Feb. 5, 1952 Filed Aug. 6, 1948 Patented Feb. 5, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TOILET SEAT g Rose Liebling, Atlanta, Ga. Application-August 6, 1948, Serial No. 42,880
Claims.
This invention relates toa toilet seat and an object of the invention is to provide a supplemental seat associated with a cover for coaction with the regular seat, said supplemental seat being adapted for use for children.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a toilet seat cover with which is adapted to nest a supplemental seat and wherein the supplemental seat carries means adjustable into and out of working position to provide a back and arm rest when desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toilet seat including an element, which when in one position partly surrounds the seat and when in a second position provides a back and arm rest.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved toilet seat, whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a toilet seat constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in side elevation showing a front support for the back rest and side arms, a secured position of certain of the parts being shown by broken lines;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary rear elevational view showing the means herein embodied for supporting raised the rear portion of the back rest and side arms; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, S denotes a conventional type of toilet seat of an adult size and which has associated thereof a cover C hingedly connected therewith in a conventional manner. The cover C. is preferably made of a plastic material and is hollow with the inner face wall I thereof formed to provide a continuous groove 2 of such dimensions to snugly receive and house a supplemental seat A. The seat A is of a size for infants or small children and when in use rests from above on the seat S with the central opening a of the seat A in required register with the central opening 3 of the seat S.
The seat A is also preferably made from a plastic material and has extending outwardly from the rear thereof the hinge straps 4 which operatively engage the pintle 5 comprised in the hinge connection between the cover C and the seat A. The length of the straps 4 are such to assure the seat A being received in the groove 2 and also to assure proper placing of the seat A upon the seat S.
The seat A substantially midway of its front and rear is provided in its outer marginal portions with the transversely opposed substantially paralle1 elongated recesses 6 in the forward portions of which are pivotally held, as at l, the lower or inner extremities of the rigid arms 8 of required length. These arms 8 are preferably flat and the pivotal mountings 1 are preferably at the forward end portions of the recesses 6. When in their lowermost positions the arms 8 are housed within the recesses 6.
The arms 8 at substantially their transverse centers are provided with the slots 9 extending a major distance therealong. The slots 9 are substantially duplicate as to form and dimensions and have the inner or lower end equidistantly spaced from their pivotal mountings l. The outer end portions of the slots 9 are provided with the short lateral extensions I0 terminating in the relatively shallow pockets I l disposed inwardly of and, of course, at similar sides of the slots 9.
Coacting with the seat A is the member R which constitutes a back rest and arm support. The member R is preferably of plastic and substantially U-shaped in form and of such dimensions as to snugly surround the rear portion of the seat A when the member R is lowered. The intermediate or base portion l2 of the member R is on an outward curvature in accordance with the rear curvature of the seat A and said portion I2 is immediately adjacent to the lower portion of the rear side edge face of the seat A when the member R is lowermost. In such position the top surface of the member R is below the top surface of the seat A and the groove 2 is of a width to readily receive and house the lowered member R when the seat A is swung up into said groove 2.
The free extremities of the side arms l2a of the member R are forwardly disposed and at a desired point inwardly of their outer or free ends, said arms We are provided with the inwardly disposed parts M, such as pins which are also disposed through the slots 9 of the arms 8.
When the member R is in its lowermost position, the arms 8 are also in their lowest positions with their free ends rearwardly disposed. When the member R is initially at its lowered position, the intermediate or base l2 will be spaced from the adjacent rear edge wall of the seat A whereupon the seat A is moved forwardly to bring the intermediate or base portion I2 into close proximity to the rear portion of the edge wall of the seat A whereby said rear edge wall serves to hold the member "R against raising and toassure desired accommodation of the seat A and member R within the groove 2. The slots 9 permit the desired forward movemen of the seat member R and also the required rearward movement when the seat A is lowered upon the seat S and it is desired to raise theinember R into working or effective position, ,The extentof rearward shifting or movement of the memberR must be sufficient to allow the member R orinore particularly the intermediate or base portion l2 thereof to freely pass over and beyond the rear edgeface of theseat-A.
The'limit of forward movement of the member R is determined by contact of the arms "8, as they swing upwardly and forwardly, with the front 'end wallsa of the recesses B and whichis preferably when the arms 8 are substantially perpendicular to the seat "A. v The base or intermediate portion i2 of the member R at the' centrell rear -part thereof is 'providedfrombelow with a recess i6 extending transversely of these'at A andwhich is adapted to house a le'g 'l'l "which, whenex'tended, coacts with both the seat A and theraised member R to provide a prop for the re'a'r portion of the r'aisedmemb'erR. I i
The Ieg I1 is herein "discloseda fiat and has oneendportion pivotaHy'mounted;as at I8, withinthe recess T6 adjacent moan end thereof so that when dropped or lowere'd to s'erve'as'a :prop, said leg willcontact with'an adjacent end wall b -of the rece's'ses lii to'li'mit"rheextent of such dfroppmgenowredmovement which is preferfablyfwhen the leg i1 'is at rightangles to the seats.
cover C"- defined by ;the groove 2, is preferably removable so that the spacee'nclosed by the inside wall 'c 'of tlie-"groove 2 maybe used as'a'storage space,
theektefitjafi rdedby the 'siots e' of the-arms a, thefinwardlyfdisposedpartser pins [4 will'be in position to pass through the lateralslot extensions 9'for seatingfwithihthepockets so that when "the member R is fully raised the front portion thereof will be properly' supported. Uponlo'weringof the 'l'e'g H, the contact of thesame'with the adj acent rear portion of the seat win afford proper support for the raised rearportion or 5,
the member R. I I
"From the-foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a, toilet seat constructed'inaccordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use byreason of the convenience and facility with which it maybe assembled'and-o'perated.
I claim:
1. In combination, a toilet seat, a substantially U -shaped member straddling the seat from the rear when in lowered position, rigid links piv otally connected with the forward portions of the member and the adjacent portions of the seat, the pivotal connection between each of the links and member comprising a slot in one and a part carried by the other workingin said slot. 2. In combination, a toilet seat, a substantially U -shaped member straddling 'the seat from the rear when in lowered position, rigid links pivotally connected with the forward portions of the member and the adjacent portions of the seat, the pivotal connection between each of the linksar'id the member comprising a slot in the link and apart carried by the member working in the slot.
'3. In combination, a toilet seat, a substantially U-shaped member straddling the seat from the rear when in lowered position, rigid links pivotally'connected with the forward portions of the member and the adjacent portions of tlie seat, the pivotal connection between each of the links and member comprising a slot in one and apart carried by the other Working in said slot and means for limiting the upward swinging movemerit of the links.
4. 'In combinatioma toiletsea't, a substantially U-shaped member straddling the seat from'the rear when in lowered position, rigid-links pivotally connected with "the forward portions of the member and the adjacent portions of *the seat, the pivotal connection between eachof the links and "member comprising a slot in one and a part carried by the other working in said slot, the side portions of the-seathaving recesses to house the links'whe'n in their lowermost 'positions.
'5. In combinationja toilet seat, a substantially U-shaped memberstrad'dling the "seat fromthe rear vvhenjsaid member is in lowered position, link and pin means coupling the U-shaped member at each of its opposite sides withtheseat-pe'ro 1 mitting back and forth movement of themenn The portion 19 *of tlie'inner wall'of the lid "or her when the member is'in'its lower positionj'said pin means being carried by the member and each link having a "longitudinal slot terminating in'a lateral offset at one end, in which the ada e g i a jacent pin sIides'each-Iinkat th'e'oppositeend When the member R is moved rearwardly to of theslot being pivoted forvertic'al swinging.
