Description

2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Feb. 20, 1951 P. L. NEWBOLD PEDAL LIF'I GATE Filed Nov. 21, 1947 INVENTOR.
Patented Feb. 20, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PEDAL LIFT GATE Park L. Newbold, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Application November 21, 1947, Serial No. 787,463
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a pedal lift gate that opens upwardly.
It is the object of my invention to provide a gate of simple and inexpensive construction that will open with a slight pressure of the foot upon a pedal.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device that is balanced to such precision that very little efiort is required for opening or closing.
Another object of my invention is to provide a gate that will open or close from either side without the operator moving from his place upon the ground.
Another object of my invention is to provide a gate of unusually long life due to being suspended in an upright position when in open position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device to which existing gates may be attached for th s novel way of operation.
Other and further features and objects of the invention will be more apparent to those skilled in the art upon a consideration of the accompanying drawings and following specifications, wherein is disclosed a single exemplary embodiment of the invention with the understanding, however, that such changes may be made therein as fall within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my device in closed position and shows in particular, the balance weight, and suspending lever.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the gate in open position and shows the balance weight floating adjacent to the ground.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view looking from the top showing the general frame arrangement and illustrating in particular the pivoted gate supporting member and pedal cross-shaft.
Figure 4 is an enlarged close-up view of the locking arrangement.
Referring now to the drawings a preferred embodiment of my invention includes a gate indicated generally at H), a frame A and an opening and closing mechanism at H.
The closing mechanism frame IA is composed of side members l2 and 2A, auxiliary member l3 and cross members l4 and MA. The gate I is secured to member 5 at l6 and is braced by H. Member I5 is the main support of the gate and is pivoted in the frame members l2 and 2A at points adjacent their forward ends indicated at l8 and IBA. Member IE to which the pedal levers 20 and 20A are secured is pivoted arm 28 is also secured to member 26 at 29 as shown in Figure 3 to form a compound lever, a lever arm 30 is attached to cross bar |5 at 3| and a link member 32 is pivotally connected to levers 28 and 3|] at 30A. A weight 33 is suspended from lever 25 at 34 and a compensating spring 35 is pivotally attached to levers 28 and 30 at 28A to obtain a balance in opening and closing. A connecting member 36 is pivotally attached to lever 25 at 31 and to the pedal member 20 at 38 as shown by a dotted directional line in Figure 3.
Attached to the side frame members l2 and, |2A and extending vertically are members 39 and 39A braced by members 40. Pivotally attached to the vertical members 39 and 39A are angular shaped handles 4| and MA their outer ends 43 being adapted to link with cooperating members 20 and 20A by means of members 43A pivotally attached at 42 and 42A. A locking arrangement shown in Figure 4 and indicated at 44 and 44A is attached to the upper extremities of members 39 and 39A and operates from either side of the gate by moving one of the pins 44 or 44A into an opening in the gate shown at 45, while an additional opening 46 is provided so that the outer end of the gate may be locked in a raised position to permit hogs or other small stock to pass under. Posts between which the outer end of the gate ll] rests are shown at 41. Foot contact members are attached to the free ends of the pedal levers 20 and 20A as shown at 48 and 48A. Where references are made as to members being attached or secured to other members it is understood that any of customary methods may be used for this purpose.
In use, the operator may be on either side of the gate as duplicate controls are provided. To raise, one places his foot on pedal 48 and pushes downward; this causes a pull on the connecting link 36, a rearwardly movement of lever 28 and cooperating lever 30, a lowering of the balance weight 33, an inward movement of the handles 4| and the subsequent raising of the gate II! to an upright position and the expansion of the compensating spring 35. To lower, one grasps handle 4| and pulls forward, being connected to pedal levers 20 as shown at 42 and 43, this effects a 3 reverse action and raises the pedals 48 and lowers gate II] to closed position. To lock gate in position one moves sliding pin 44 into place.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a pedal lift device, the combination of a frame composed of cross members and parallel side members secured together, a main shaft cross member pivoted in the parallel side members at points adjacent to their forward ends, ,a gate secured to the pivoted shaft, another-cross shaft pivoted in the parallel side frame members at points adjacent to their rearward ends, a pair of pedal levers attached thereto, a pair of upright frame members supporting a pivoted compound lever, a weight attached to the elongated upper '1 arm of the lever, an operatinglever secured to the main cross shaft at a point" adjacent to the" gate; a connecting member between the operatinglever 2. The combination, with a frame, of a gate secured to a lever member pivotally attached to members placed adjacent to the handles and v adapted to fit within apertures in the gate, substantially as described.
