England I Application-October 29, 1932, Serial'No. 640,307, I
and. in. Great. Britain November-'20, 1931 8 Glaimt. (Cl. 226*):
This invention is for improvements in: 0.1 MM:
ing tocigarette packing machines, and .reiers moreparticularly to apparatus for feedirm pictures-011w card strips on such machines, and: has; for its, 5v object the provision of. improvedmeanswhereby pictures or card'smay beaimertedbetweenitwasuperimposed rows of cigarettes. I
It is found that when the cigarette picture. or card strip is placed .in: this position the packet paper packet, is considerably reinforced.
The present invention consistsof. apparatusiior, use, on a cigarette packing machine whereby-a batch of cigarettes comprising. two or more surows are brought together again; with? the pictmte. between them. i
' The invention will 7 be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in whichz- Fig. 1 shows a section of a portion of a packing machine with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central section of Fig. 2, but with the parts in a slightly different position.
Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 3, but to a larger scale and with the parts in a different position. Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 4, but showing theparts after the picture has been completely covered by the upper row of cigarettes.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a pusher piece. 3 Referring to the drawing which shows one way of carrying the invention into effect, the packing machine, the bed 1 of which is shown, is provided with a cigarette feeding apparatus of any suitable kind (not shown), and a pusher 2 mounted on a conveyor 3 is arranged to convey a batch 4 of cigarettes comprising at least two rows, from the cigarette feeding apparatus to the packing mechanism. The cigarettes are then carried along the bed 1 of the machine through a channel formed by guides 5 to the packing mechanism.
Any suitable type of picture feeding apparatus is mounted on the side of the machine and arranged to feed a picture down between conveyor bands 6 into the guide channel. Two thin plates contact, so that the distance between their op- .perimposedrows. of cigarettes compacted. ready for packing and which maybe carried-along by a conveyor or thelike, is separated and a Dietm'e-or card placed between the rows, after ,whlchgthei '7 are mounted in the guide channel parallel to posite; edges is about equal to the: width of. thev guide. channel and. the edges; gradually sweep in-- wards; until they are-fairly close together at the centzeeof the-bed of the machine as shown in In addition to this,- the edges are bevelled. 6C asindicated by the shading at 8 so that they pre-* sent a comparatively sharp edge to the oncome ing cigarettes, and the pusher pieces. 2 of. the
conveyor aremadei with horizontalslots 9 at each containing the cigarettes, which :is'oftem 8; than 9 side, leaving a narrow central rib 10= so that they can passby theplates 'l. The plates extend for a distance roughly equal to the length of the. picture afterthey have approached close to one another as. above mentioned, and the upper surfm of. the extended portions are cut away at 11 ,to form; a recessin-which a picture 12 canlie.
'I'hepicturesare' delivered one at a time by the belt-a6 from: the feeding apparatus on to'the recessed surfaces 11 ofthe plates? so that they lie paralleltd theguides in the lengthwise direc 76 tion. Aeeaehubatclr of cigarettes is carried along by the pusher piece, the sharp edges of the plates enter the space between the rounded portions of the two outer cigarettes, and this movement con- 80 tinues towards the middle of the rows until the top layer of cigarettes is separated from the bottom layer without injury to the cigarettes, and passes over the picture lying in the recess. As the pusher piece passes through the plates, the picture is gathered up by the central rib 10 of the pusher piece and carried off between the two layers of cigarettes, so that when the batch of cigarettes is clear of the two plates mentioned, the
cigarette picture lies between the two rows forming the batch. V
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In apparatus for inserting a flat blank between engaging rows of a batch of cigarettes, the combination with means for effecting separation of at least one row from the remainder of the batch to form the batch into two portions, of means for introducing a blank between the portions of the batch thus separated, and means for reassembling the separated portions of the batch with the blank between and contacting with cigarettes in each portion.
2. In apparatus for inserting a flat blank be tween two superimposed rows of a batch of cigaseparation of at least one row from the remainder i g of the batch to arrange the cigarettes in two portions, and means for interposing a blank between the two portions.
3. In apparatus for inserting a fiat blank between two superimposed rows of a batch of cigarettes, the combination with means for feeding the batch withthe rows in engagement through.
a predetermined path, of means extendinginto the path of movement of the batch for effecting separation of at least one row from the remainder of the batch to arrange the cigarettes in two portions, said means comprising a stationary device positioned so as to pass between the rows of the moving batch, and means for interposing a blank blank to reassemble the batch with the blank interposed between the rows.
between the two portions.
4. In apparatus for inserting a flat blank between two superimposed rows of a batchof ciga rettes, the combination with means for feeding the batch with the rows in engagement through a predetermined path, of means extending into the path of movement of the batch for effecting separation of at least one row from the remainderof' the batch to arrange the cigarettes in two portions, said means comprising a pair of spaced.
stationary plates positioned was to pass between the rows of the moving batch, and means for interposing a blank between the two portions.
5. In apparatus for inserting a flat blank; be-
tween two superimposed rows of a batch of the combination with. means for cigarettes, feeding the batch with the rows in engagement through a predetermined path, of means extending into thepath of movement of the batch for effecting separation of at least one row from=the sides of the batch towards the central portion thereof, andmeans for interposing a blankbetween the two portions. 1
6. In apparatus for inserting a fiat blank between two superimposed rows of a batch of cigarettes, the combination with means for feeding the rows of the moving batch, means for depositing a blank on the plates, and means for removing the blank and the cigarettes from the plates after one portion ofthe batch has passed over the 7. In apparatus'for inserting a flat blank between two'superimposed rows of a batch of cigarettes,- the combination with a continuous conveyor for feeding the batch through a predetermined path, of means extending within the said path for lifting at least one row of cigarettes to eifect separation of the batch into two portions,
means-for feeding ablank in position on said "first named means, and means forming part of said conveyor for withdrawing the blank with the cigarettes from said first named means.
