MACHINE FOR APPLYING SEALING STRIPS T0 CIGARETTE cdMAINERs Filed Jan. 10. 1931- Patented Aug. 2, 1932 UNITED mm PATENT OFFICE mms'r 11mm 11mm, or nan'snax, enemy, ASSIGNOB m m rum unwanam cmm 'rmmscamx-rnam a; e. manna a 00., or nansnax, om.-
CHINE FOB APPLYING SEALING STRIPS '10 CIGARETTE oom'antm i Application illed January 10, 1931, Serial No. 507,771, and in Germany January 10, 1980.
In known sealing machines, in order not to disfigure the lid space, that is the displayed side of the container, the sealing strlp was applied in such manner that its centre por tion lay on the lower side of the container and the suitably shaped ends on the sides of the container, the joints thus overlapping but not encroaching upon the displayed side. As, however, the known machines are so constructed that the sealing strip is passed above the guideway of the box and applied from above, the boxes must pass through the guideway in a reversed position, that is to say with the front side downwards. This is disadvantageous as the marginal portions of the front side become mis-shapen by friction against the guideway, particularly if sensitive or fresh printing is provided on the front side. It can also easily happen that the shocks to which the containers are subjected when passing through the sealing machine, cause particles of tobacco to fall from the cigarettes which, as the boxes have run through the machine upside down, i. e. lying in the position its reflection in a mirror would appear to have and give the buyer a bad impression of the goods. If the particles of tobacco lie in the lower part of the box they do not make the goods unsightly because their presence is not discovered until after some of the cigarettes have been used and is attributed to the'fact thatthe smoker has been carrying the box in his pocket.
In contrast to the above, this invention consists in that the sealing strip is applied from below to the box passing through the guide, so that the boxes can travel in an upright position in order finally to carry the sealing strip in the manner described in the introduction. Substantially known means may be employed for the feeding and the application of the sealing strip.
Such a machine is shown, by way of example, in the annexed drawing which is limited to the parts necessary for understanding the invention.
Fig. 1 is a diagram of the guideway 1 with the container P passing through it, and the sealing strip S applied below.
Fig.2 is a sectional elevation of the parts in question.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device of Fig. 2.
Beside the guideway 1 the belt 3 with the.
catch 4 passes over the disc 2, 2, containers P being passed through the guideway by the catch 4. Below the guideway is located the of the rotec'ltive plate 7 e sealing strips S are oused in a magazine 10,- the bottom of which is only partly closed by the base 11. Thus a controlled suction finger 12 can seize the strip which happens to'be at the bottom at the moment and draw it down so that its end comes into contact with the- rollers 13, 14..
The upper part of the roller 13 is cut away jecting marginal portions of which roller transfer the adhesiveu'emoved from the container 9'to'the -sealing stri S onboth sides and it remains stationary at the moment when the suction finger swings down just so that the end of the sealing strip can run through the gap formed by the cutting away of the half of the roller and rest on the top of the lower roller 14. The next moment the stri is seized by the half-roller 13 which in com ination with the roller 14 passes the strip to a second pair of rollers 15-16 and through these to the grippers. The grippers lead the sealing strip to a point .9 where it is released. Then the container arriving next .is in the position indicated by dot-dash lines at P so that the sealing strip overhangs from the container sufficiently to cover one side thereof. The catches thrust the container with the strip already attached to its base between the rolie'z's '17 mounted on vertical axles, which pass it under the plunger 18. The latter drives the container down through a corresponding opening in the plate 19 and. further, between the brushes 20, in I which operation the end parts of the sealing strip for covering the side of the box are passed round and pressed on. Finally the container falls on to the conveyer be t 21, which carries it away.
Having thus described the nature of the I said invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect, I claim a 1. A machine for applying a sealing strip to a cigarette container comprising means 1 for applying a sealing strip tothe bottom of said container while the latter is in upright position with the ends ofsaid strip overlapping the respective ends of said container and means for bending said over-lapping ends upon the end walls of said container.
2. A machine for applying sealing means to a cigarette container comprising means for applying a gummed sealing strip to the bottom of said container while the, latter is in upright position with the ends of said strip overlapping the respective ends of said container and means for bending-and pressing said overlapping ends upon the end walls of said container to paste said ends thereto.
3. A machine for applying sealing strips to cigarette containers having seamed sides comprising means for feeding said containers in upright position along a guide, means for feeding gummed sealing strips below said V .containers and applying them to the bottoms of said containers with the ed of said strip overlapping the ends of sai container. and
means for bending the respective overlapping edges upon theropposite end walls 0 sai containers.
4. A machine for applying sealing strips to cigarette containers comprising means for feeding said containers in u right position, means for applying gumme sealing strips to the container bottom during their path of travel and while they are in upright position with the ends of said strip over apping op posite ends of said container and means for bending the said overlapping ends upon the res ective end walls of said container.
testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
